“I know.” My hands went to my throat. “I’m not defending him.”
Jake sat our food down on the table and made a quick exit.
“Good.” She lowered her voice, but eyed me. “So what happened after?”
“Nothing.” I shook my head. “Getting choked out kind of ended the conversation. I got away from him and haven’t seen him since.”
“You think he’ll show back up?” she asked.
“Or send someone else to kill me.” I shrugged.
“We have to tell Anna, and Justice.” Dana held her heart, while ignoring her pancakes.
“No, we can’t. Not yet anyway.” I reached out touched her arm.
“You’re in danger. The Guardians protect their own above all else.” She leaned forward. Her belly bounced off the edge of the table.
“We tell Anna and Justice, and they tell Razor and we go after them. What do you think is going to happen?” I held onto the edge of the table. “Mase isn't some lame ass dude beating up on his girlfriend. He is the SouthEast Dragon Vice President. I will not have the Guardians go to war with the Dragons for me. If it comes to that, I’ll just take off. I can take care of myself.”
Dana looked away. She blinked away tears.
I came to her side of the table.
“Dana,” I put a hand on her stomach.
She placed her hand on mine. A few tears fell. She wiped them away.
Then her expression changed.
She gripped my hand.
Pain shot up my arm.
I tried to pull it away.
She held on tight.
“You listen to me, little Miss Take Off.” She leaned into me. “Leaving is not an option. The Guardians protect their own even when they are too stupid to protect themselves…” The way she spat out stupid made me cringe. “You’re not going anywhere. We are going to figure this out. You are going to stay away from Mr. MasonAssholeScott. And if he comes back for you, I’ll take him out myself.”
“Ow, Okay.” I retrieved my hand and flexed my fingers. “Damn girl. I think that baby has made you even more dangerous.”
She nodded and returned to her pancakes.
“Besides. I don’t think he’d come after me again.” I switched back to my side of the table. “But, let’s give it some time. We have a lot going on right now. I don’t want to add to everyone’s issues.”
Maybe I was protecting him.
I hate those women, who made excuses when their men treat them like shit.
Sure, we aren’t talking about my boyfriend knocking me around because he was a sadistic fuck or needed to control me. This situation was so different.
No less insane, but different.
Mace shot me, left me for dead; his father killed my best friend. For all I knew, he had ran back and told his father I was still alive. I had no reason to expect his loyalty…
I told him the truth about his father and if he didn’t believe me …
Well fuck him.
