“Ungh,” I moaned as I draped my hands around his neck.

“You’re so soft and hot inside,” he whispered as he pumped his finger in and out of me.

I dug my hands into his hair, tugged his bottom lip between both of mine, and circled my legs around his hips.

“Mmm, Samuel.” After taking another quick kiss, he leaned back, and I felt the smooth, blunt heat of his cockhead at my entrance. With his gaze locked on mine, he pushed forward, slowly entering my body.

I had expected it to hurt, but there was no pain, only a feeling of connection and warmth. When he bottomed out, he returned his lips to mine, circling his hips and moaning into my mouth before gliding out again. Meeting his motions, I raised my backside as he entered and pulled back when he slid out. Neither of us moved quickly. We enjoyed the moment, enjoyed the connection, enjoyed each other.

“Just like this,” he whispered into my mouth. “From now on we can be just like this.”

My heart soared at his words, feeling complete and whole. The constant, steady in and out, the scent of his skin, and the sounds of his body slapping against mine inflamed me further. I tightened my hold on him, grasping his shoulders and digging my heels into his ass, and thrust my hips up and down.

“Oh God,” he groaned. “Need you.”

As if my passion inspired his, Korban’s breath came out faster and he plunged into me harder and deeper. The mating knot at the base of his cock swelled and locked him inside me, keeping us connected. Instinctively, I arched my neck back and to the side.

Mine.I heard the word in my head as he lunged and buried his sharp canines into the juncture of my neck and shoulder. My balls tightened, and my seed burst from me in a perfect moment of bliss. Korban shivered above me as he emptied himself into my body.Mine.

It wasn’t until I was spent, gasping for air, and feeling Korban lick the permanent mark he had given me that I realized I’d heard that voice before.

It had led me back from the depths of the forest the day my father died. It had taken me to the evidence that showed the cause of his demise. It had comforted me when the council members had delivered Korban as my tribute rather than Dirk. It had calmed me when my pack member questioned me and I went for his jugular.

“Korban?” I asked shakily.

He kissed my cheek and buried his face against my throat. “My mate,” he whispered.

Chapter 13

“IHEARDyou,” I said quietly as I gently combed my fingers through his hair. “Just now, in my head and other times too.” I cleared my throat. “I heard you, and you helped me when I needed you most.”

After his mating knot had receded, he had kissed his way down my torso, lapped up my seed, and then resumed his earlier attention to my groin.

“How did you know about the syringe?” I asked. “You weren’t at the battle, but you led me to it.”

“I was gone when my father issued the challenge. I hurried back as soon as I could, but it was too late. As soon as I heard what happened, I went to the battle ring to scent you, and that’s when I saw it. I knew right away something was wrong. My father is strong, but your father is stronger. So then I looked for you and brought you to it.”

“You brought me to it by talking to mein my head,” I said.

“It happens with true mates,” he said. “That’s what I’ve heard.”

“Yes. I’ve read about it. But the writings say a mental link develops only after true mates have been tying for a long time. That’s if it develops at all.”

Korban shrugged and went back to licking my balls. “The writings aren’t always accurate. I think we’ve already established that. Besides, we’ve known each other for fifteen years.”

“That’s another thing,” I said, thinking out loud. “Our ancestors’ writings say true mates don’t meet in childhood.”

Not seeming bothered in the least by yet another inconsistency between what we’d been taught and what we now knew without a doubt to be true, Korban caressed my thigh and said, “Do the writings give a reason?”

“Um.” I thought back to what I’d read. “I think it’s to prevent people from tying and having cubs too young.”

Snickering, Korban said, “Well, I doubt either of us is going to find himself accidently with child.” He shook his head. “Isn’t it funny how so many of these absolute truths and rules we learn have the added bonus of controlling our behavior to match some old-fashioned sense of right and wrong?”

“I never thought of it that way.”

“Well, you’re the expert scholar, not me, but it sure seems that way.”

I couldn’t dispute the truth of that observation. “You’re right. Maybe it’s time we reevaluate the writings and pack lore.”
