“I’d better stop, lest I surrender to the temptation to massage other parts of your body,” he murmured.
Feeling daring she studied him as his fingers dropped down. “Maybe I’d like that as well.”
She leaned forward, staring at his mouth. He needed no further incentive. Jared curled a hand around her neck and drew her close.
Her eyes closed as his mouth descended upon hers.
His kiss felt oh, so good. It was sweet and tart, a lick of fire polished off by a droplet of ice. All her emotions raged to the surface as she leaned into him. Her lips parted under the subtle pressure of his and his tongue leisurely licked inside her mouth, tasting her. He sipped her mouth as if sampling a fine cognac, as if they had all the time in the world and the world only existed at that moment for them both.
Losing herself in the kiss, she let her tongue touch his. Desire filled her, a sexual awareness inflaming her body, making her want him now, nothing else mattered. This felt so right, so special and yet she knew she’d felt like this before, long ago, another place and time. Or maybe her dreams. Didn’t matter, only Jared mattered with the magick he worked on her mouth, making her ache and want and need him…
Abruptly he pulled away, panting, his pupils dilated, but his expression grim.
“Son of a bitch.”
Confused and frustrated, she licked her lips. “What? Was that your incubus magick, Jared? What’s wrong?”
“It wasn’t my magick. But we’re no longer alone. Smell that?”
Through the haze of sexual arousal, she scented a foulness riding the air, unnatural and sickly sweet, like rotting meat. Her panicked gaze sought his.
“Demon,” she whispered.
“A powerful one. Damnit, I anticipated this, but figured we’d have more time. You’re not safe here, Harper.”
Her body quivered, this time not from pleasure, but fear.
Was she truly safe anywhere?
Chapter 16
Jared had zipped her back to his castle as quickly as he’d brought her to the park to practice.
Odd how she was getting used to this mode of transport, and the use of magick in everyday life. It felt like years ago that she’d read that letter from her parents, which set her on this new course.
After insisting she eat a hearty meal, during which he seemed absent-minded, Jared had left. He told her he would see her at sunrise.
First he’d warned her again about avoiding the north turret, where he slept at night.
No denying the amazing chemistry between them.
As she walked around the guest bedroom, Harper kept pressing fingers to her mouth. She still felt the imprint of his mouth upon hers, the erotic way he kissed.
Never had a kiss aroused her so quickly, nor left her so frustrated and unfulfilled.
Sleep proved impossible. Tossing and turning in bed, she finally dozed off, only to dream of demons chasing her through the park. When she reached out for Jared, her pleading turned into a scream.
For he had turned into a demon as well, a beast with enormous horns, a mouth filled with teeth ready to tear apart her flesh…
Shaken, her heart racing, Harper reached for the glass of water at her nightstand and drank deeply.
No use trying to sleep anymore.
She slipped out of the massive bed and donned the warm flannel robe draped over one chair. She pulled on foam slippers and tip-toed out of the bedroom.
Time to explore. The castle was quiet after midnight.
Sonia had said that Jared had another form, a form that was fun, after midnight. That dream made her wonder.
