“Says the nigga who bought a child who still likes barbies Tiffany.”

I laughed. “Trust me, that’s mild compared to this fool right here. Kale woke up this morning to a new phone, new iPad, jewelry, and more fucking shoes than either of us can count. Not to mention, I had a hard time getting her out of here this morning. She kept wanting to change her shoes and put on her jewelry.”

“Ain’t shit wrong with me spoiling mine. I spoil yo’ ass, don’t I?” He was leaned against me.

I smiled because he was right about that, and it felt damn good being spoiled by him, loved by him, touched by him, and everything else when it came to him.

The rest of the night went wonderful, and my baby had so much fun just being surrounded by family and opening presents. I loved seeing that smile on her face. It let me know that I wasdoing my job as a mother, so I guess I could pat myself on the back. As long as Kale was happy, so was I.

After eating all of the cake her little heart desired, she took Bernard to her room, and by now, I was pretty sure she was sleep. I never needed to give Kale a bedtime. She just naturally fell asleep around eight thirty to nine.

“Baby girl is out like a light.” Savior’s voice filled the kitchen.

“I figured that.” My eyes glossed over his handsome frame as he came toward me.

Lane and Taurus had left about an hour ago while my mother was in the guest room asleep. She had also turned in early.

The next time he spoke, he was standing in front of me with a smile. “Did you enjoy yourself?” He picked me up and put me on the counter in front of him.

“Very much. Now we will be on the boat tomorrow with children. That, I may not enjoy so much.” I pouted a little.

He leaned in and kissed my lips. “Stop pouting so much. You’ll have a nigga thinking he isn’t doing his job.”

CHAPTER

SEVENTEEN

SAVIOR

Everyonein my household was asleep when Reese called me. He instructed me to turn on the nighttime news before hanging up the phone. I walked into the living room and found the remote. I took a seat and pointed the remote in the direction of the TV. Once the screen came on, I searched for the nighttime news, and there it was. The headline read:Two slain vice agents found hanging in front of team leader’s home. Then the newscaster went on to say that it was an apparent message from the local gangs for the Chicago Police Department. At this point, they could take this shit any way that they wanted because I was nowhere near done. I had already made up my mind that I wasn’t gonna wait for them to come for me. Instead, I was going after all of them and making sure not to leave a soul standing.

“Daddy, you’re up?” My thoughts were interrupted by Kale’s voice coming from behind me.

I turned the TV off and stood to my feet. When I looked down at her, she was wiping her eyes. “What’s wrong, Baby K?” I asked.

“I couldn’t sleep.”

I nodded my head. “C’mon. Let’s get you some cashew milk.”

“What milk?” She had a confused expression on her face.

I laughed and walked her toward the kitchen. “Cashew milk. When I was younger, my big mama used to make me cashew milk when I couldn’t sleep.”

She nodded.

I picked her up and put her on the counter, then I walked toward the fridge and opened the doors to grab the cashew milk. I kept it in the crib because I didn’t really fuck with real milk. It didn’t sit well on my stomach, so at a young age, Big Mama used to try different milks for me.

“Is it sweet?” Kale asked as I poured it into a pot to warm it.

“A little bit.” I turned the pot and leaned back against the counter to watch it. “What do you think about your new school?”

She shrugged. “It’s fine. I’m just there for so long.”

“It’s because you gotta learn and be smarter than everybody.”

She nodded. “Even you and Mommy?”

“Yes, even smarter than me and your mama.” I watched the milk come to a slight boil, then I grabbed a mug for both of us and poured it. “It might be a little hot, so blow it before you drink.”
