LANE
I watched Regancy stuff the chicken down her throat like she hadn’t eaten for days and shook my head. “What happen to meatless and clean eating?” She was forever going on those cleanses that were supposed help her keep off the extra weight, and for the most part, she succeeded, but that time, she’d failed miserably.
She looked up at me and finished chewing before she offered the very explanation that blew my fucking shoes off my feet. “I got knocked up.”
“Excuse me? That is nothing to play with. Tell me you’re serious.” I looked at her to see if she was lying or telling me the truth.
“No. Serious. I’m pregnant. I found out a few weeks ago. I haven’t said anything to anyone because I’m still in the first trimester and it’s a high-risk pregnancy.”
I had the biggest smile on my face as I just looked at her. “I’ma be a godmom of two, and you’re ab?—”
“To have another baby, but this time I have him.” She smiled.
“You do, and how does he feel about it?” I asked.
“He took it better than me. I went to the doctor thinking I was sick, when, in reality, it’s a damn miracle.”
“It is, and I’m just so happy for you. You deserve to be happy and in bliss with someone who genuinely cares about your overall well-being, even if you stress that man out.”
“How do you know I stress him out? It could be the complete opposite.” She gave me that guilty look.
“Because I know your ill-tempered ass, and I’m sure with pregnancy it’s hell.” I knew I was right, because I knew my best friend. “Anyway, what are your plans for your birthday? Just because you don’t bring it up doesn’t mean we just forget about it.” I smiled.
She shrugged me off. “Well, I haven’t thought about it.”
“Since you haven’t thought about it, allow me to. It’ll be beautiful and boring since I can’t get you drunk.
She and I talked for about an hour before Taurus found himself in the doorway. He was rushing me because he was ready to go. Just like a nigga to dictate my day and then rush me when I finally got comfortable.
“I will be in touch with you about your birthday.” I kissed her cheek before standing and walking toward Taurus.
“Aye, sis, can you please stop provoking this nut ass nigga? You be pushing buttons.” Taurus laughed as Savior walked over to Regancy.
“She ain’t pushing no buttons. She just wanna get fucked up.” Savior cut his eyes in Regancy’s direction before gripping the food container that was sitting on the table in front of her.
“Yeah, and whose gonna attempt it?” she asked, looking in his direction.
He laughed. “That’s the shit I be talking about.”
I giggled.
“Don’t dodge my call either when I call about this birthday dinner.” I pointed in her direction as Taurus pulled me by my hand out of the door before I could say anything else. He was so damned pushy and demanding. Before I could get out of the restaurant, I looked up and saw a familiar face. I couldn’t control the expression on my face as I stormed in the direction of the table. I mean, I already knew it was something because of the conversation I had with my mother, but I definitely didn’t expect to see it with my own eyes.
“Dad?” I looked down at him, then over at the attractive brown-skinned girl that looked at least half my age.
CHAPTER
TEN
REGANCY
I was onlyat the tavern to grab a few papers and then I was out. It was the Friday before my birthday, and Savior said he had something planned for us. He asked me to have my and Kale’s weekend bag packed, and that intrigued me. He was definitely one for surprises, so I never put anything past him. After I gathered all of the papers that I needed, I was about to exit my office when there was a knock at my door. “Come in,” I called out. I halfway expected it to be one of my employees, but it wasn’t. To my surprise, it was my brother. He looked puzzled as he walked into my office. “Are you okay?” I asked
“You seemed real cozy with Savior the other day.” My brother glanced at me.
My face wrinkled in confusion. I hid nothing that I did, but I rarely saw or spoke to my brother, so maybe he didn’t know about Savior and me, but I wasn’t granting him a pass to give me one of those lectures that people gave when they didn’t know what the hell they were talking about. “Yes. We?—”
“That’s my boss and all, but you’re my sister. I’m sure you know that he isn’t the type of nigga that you want to be with.” Heput his fist to his mouth like he wanted to take his words back and reword them, but he couldn’t. I already heard them. “He’s probably a good dude and all, but he’s a beast in these streets. Savior… He may be one way with you, but he has enough niggas gunning for him to know that y’all at risk being in his life. This is?—”
