Mr.Darcy jumped out from beside a corner and split his claws into the man who had attacked me.

“Fucking cat,” he growled, lifting his arm to slap Mr.Darcy away.

I gripped the cutting board that I had finally been able to reach and slammed it over the man’s head.Mr.Darcy hissed, and ran to the other side of the room, as the man fell to the ground in a heap, blood covering his forehead.

I tried not to think too hard about that, as I tried to make my way towards Lex.But he stood there, two men on the ground in front of him and his arm covered in blood.

“Cops are on their way,” Lex said as he gestured towards the security panel.

I would care about that soon.I would focus on real life as soon as I could breathe. But I could only think of one thing.“Lex.You’re bleeding.”

He looked down at his arm and shook his head.“I’m fine.I’m fine.”But he staggered a bit, and I grabbed a dish towel and covered the wound on his arm.

“Oh my God,” I whispered.

“Just a little lightheaded at the sight of my own blood. But hey, Mr.Darcy saves the day,” he said softly as he studied my face.

“They hurt you.”We needed to tie these guys up or dosomethingbut no one was moving and I could only think of Lex in that moment.Honestly I could barely get a thought through the chaos in this moment.

“You’re the one who’s bleeding.”

He uses his free hand to touch my forehead.I grimaced, not realizing that I’d hit my head hard enough to cut myself at some point.

“So are you.”

“I’m going to kill Justin,” I snapped. At least I could think of that through the fog.

“We’re going to have to wait in line,” he whispered, and I knew we were both finally coming down from the adrenaline high.

And so as Mr.Darcy stood in front of us, back arched and hair raised, I held the towel to Lex’s wound and tried to figure out exactly what the fuck had just happened. The man that I loved was bleeding, and there were three large men knocked out and bleeding on my floor.

And that’s when my knees went weak.

Lex caught me, and we sank to the floor, as sirens rang in the distance and the neighbors began to pile into my home. They took in the scene and helped secure what they could before I could even say a damn word.

I just let Lex hold me, my heart beating so loud I could practically feel it in my ears.

“I love you, Mercy.You’re okay.We’ve got this.”

“I love you too.Just don’t let me go, okay?Because I think I’m going to throw up.”

“Deal.Oh, I might throw up with you.”

And that’s how I found myself laughing as the cops stormed in, and I could only imagine the sight before them.I couldn’t think about anything else except for the fact that Lex was bleeding, and both of us could have died.

I could have lost him.We could have lost each other.

And Justin was going to have to pay.

But for now, we were safe. And that was all that mattered.

Lexington

“Only twenty-three stitches. You’re not even close to the world record for the Montgomerys.”Dash leaned back in his chair and crossed his ankles, setting his feet on my hospital bed.

I glared at my cousin.“Is there a reason that you’re trying to annoy me?”
