“You had sex with him more than once,” Jordie starts.
“But in the same day. That’s allowed.” My hole clenches at the memory.
Jordie keeps going. “You fooled around on different occasions and slept in the same bed.”
“I was drunk.” I cross my arms in front of my chest.
“Without having sex.”
“I was drunk.”
“Why did you go to him?” he persists. “You have an extra key for your apartment under your welcome mat.”
“I didn’t think about it,” I say weakly.
“You could have come to my place, Mel’s, Sally’s, she lives in the same building. Why did you go to your enemy?”
I open and the close my mouth. I know why I went to Cole’s place. I realized it a few minutes ago, but fuck, admitting it out loud is a whole new can of worms.
Jordie continues, “You broke every single one of your precious rules for him. And those stupid pranks are a twisted way to keep being in each other’s space. To keep seeing each other.”
“Like a weird as fuck courtship.” Mell snap his fingers.
“For once in your life, you want more than a fuck, Kai.” Jordie keeps talking, but his voice sounds distant while my mind gets filled with a whirlwind of thoughts. Hearing it out loud makes it real. I like Cole. I really, really do.
It feels like my gut is tying itself into terrible knots. Cold sweats are assailing me, and goosebumps are erupting on my arms and back. I’m terrified.
My phone starts ringing. I pull it out of my pocket and without looking at the screen, I answer it—hoping it’s Cole.
“Hello?”
“Am I talking to Kaiden Donnelly.”
My shoulders slump. “Who wants me?”
The guy hums. “I’m Mr. Devenport’s lawyer, Joseph Pondrige.” Cole’s lawyer? “I have a matter to discuss and would like to do it face to face.”
“What’s this about?” I ask, having no idea what is going on.
“I’m in Newnan at the moment.” He’s in town. “Can we meet at the Excelsior lobby?”
“Excelsior?” The luxury hotel on the beach?
“Can’t you tell me on the phone?” I try. This is not the moment to go talk to…anybody. I just realized a biggie. And I’m freaking out, for the second time today. My frantic heart is enough proof of that.
“I’m afraid I cannot. You should take this seriously, Mr. Donnelly. ” And I thought Cole had a snobbish tone. Cole. I should go and hear him out since it’s in regards to him somehow.
I sigh heavily. “Alright. I can be there in fifteen minutes.”

COLE
While waiting for the traffic light to turn green, I look at my phone. Three missed calls from Kaiden, from three hours ago. Fuck. I was dealing with my family, and I left the cell in Russel’s car.
Now Kaiden’s phone goes straight to voicemail. I don’t want to leave a message. I need to look him in the eye when I talk to him.
