“One of the main reasons.”
“You ruined a perfectly romantic moment, you asshole!” he retorts, huffing and puffing with his arms crossed on his chest. Was it really that romantic?
“Around thirty million,” I abruptly tell him.
“Thirty…” he sputters, dropping his hands on the bed. His expression would be ridiculous if the memory of my parents kicking me out of their lives once again wasn’t so fresh.
“Fuck! You really must love me.” Hesitancy is filling his eyes now. “Are you sure? You might regret it. Now I’m sort of happy I’m not the only main reason.”
I cup his face. “I would have given them the same answer even without you in the picture. But you fucking are taking all the damn space. The first time I saw you at Sally’s it felt like something had shifted. I thought it was just indigestion…” That earns me a painful nipple twist. “But-but now, inexplicably and unreasonably, I adore you, Kaiden. I never cared about the money. I like my life as it is. I have what I need. My company is going well. And if my family won’t accept who I’ve become, that’s their loss.”
“My gain,” Kaiden whispers sweetly. Giving me quick, light pecks on the lips. Fuck, I like this. This candid intimacy between us.
Which he breaks with his next words. “Damn, your folks are cheap. I mean, they offered me only two-hundred thousand when they have millions?” he huffs. “I’m appalled for the cheap payout. Maybe egging the fuckers’ house would make me feel slightly better.”
“Which house?” My family has around fifteen properties. “The’ll have cleaners take care of the mess and get you arrested by one of their judges’ friends.”
“Fuck. Orange is not my color.” He scrunches up his nose in a quasi-adorable way. His arms curl around my neck again, his sweet scent wraps all around me. “You adore me, huh?” he smirks, repeating my earlier words.
“Inexplicably and unreasonably, I think I said as well.”
He ignores me. “I’m gonna be milking that for a while. I changed your world!” He lifts his hands up in the air. “So there’s no need to convince you to move in with me then.” The words make me freeze. But just for a second.
“You just want to have one big apartment,” I accuse him.
His eyes widen. “Yes! But we should try the cohabitation first, here. Right here at my place.”
“Why here and not at my place?”
He averts his eyes.
“What’s going on, Kaiden?”
“Stop being a stubborn goat. And think about how much space Meghan and Kate will have…away from you.”
Fuck, how can I forget the infesting rodents?
I unceremoniously throw him off of me onto the bed and climb on top of him. Securing his wrists over his head with one hand, I thread my fingers in his light blond hair spread freely on the sheets. He looks up with mischief written all over his face. “Is it so hard for you to believe I want to have you with me?”
“No, darling. But it is suspicious.” I raise a brow at him.
“Your apartment sucks, we should board the door and leave it locked for a few weeks,” he says, his eyes nervously on the left and then down.
“Darling, what did you do?” I slowly ask him, adding a menacing undertone to my words.
“I like when you call me that,” he softly confesses.
“I like calling you that.”
He puffs out his cheeks, and then blows the air out. “Remember you love me.”
“That’s still debatable,” I quip.
“No backsies,” he singsongs
“Kaiden!”
“Okay! Bossy much,” he mumbles. “I was extra-pissed because I thought you wanted to get rid of me, you left, then the lawyer came, the engagement, not answering your phone…”
