And I feel…bothered by it.

I…miss it.

The attention, I mean. I’ve felt unnerved by his open eagerness for me—his eyes twinkling with such unadulterated lust and awe, I didn’t know how to react. It confused me and at the same time, it clung to my mind like cat hair on a velvet sofa. Maybe I’ve gone too long without fucking. I usually get some once a month. It helps to unplug my body and mind from time to time. But I’ve been more stressed lately. Yeah, that must be it. Need to find an easy, eager-to-please random and fuck her brains out. My dick twitches at the prospect. But my eyes are again fixed on Mel’s juicy butt.Juicy?

“Where’s Gar?” Kaiden suddenly asks.

“At the pet shelter. It’s his turn to volunteer today,” Mel replies, still dancing. Garret is a friend of Mel’s. He’s a funny sense of humor and he seems quite mature for his young age. “I’ll bring him some food later,” he adds, moving to his hotdog on the table and biting off a huge piece. I’ve never noticed how large Mel’s mouth is. He licks at the small blob of mustard stuck to the corner of his mouth, and I find my gaze focusing on the pink tip of his tongue slowly stroking. I can’t stop myself from wondering how warm and wet would that feel… Mel’s eyes find mine and my depraved mind turns blank. Cheeks pink. What the hell is happening? For a second, I see some kind of emotion filling his gaze. But he quickly looks away, and after dropping his half-eaten hotdog on a paper plate he goes back to Daniel.

A heavy pat on my shoulder almost makes me jump.

“Finally!” Kaiden exclaims. I don’t waste any words, but wait for him to continue. “Mel stopped his annoying and coquettish teasing.”

He stopped also talking to me.

“It was never annoying.” I realize how true my statement is right this moment. Thank God the music is drawing away my words, making it impossible for the others to hear.

Kaiden makes a doubtful noise. “He used to light up like the goddamn sun every time he saw you. Following you like a lost puppy. Edging on pathetic—if you ask me.”

“It wasn’t like that. Stop painting Mel like a hopeless loser.” I feel the need to defend him because it really has never been like that. Yes, he used every chance he got to hit on me, but in a cute, persistent, at-times-clumsy and funny way.

Kaiden holds his hands up in submission. “He’s finally over his crush on you. He came to the undeniable conclusion that you are as straight as the proverbial arrow.”

Straight. The word echoes inside my head while my eyes are yet again zeroed in on Mel’s sinuous body.

“Holy Shit!” Mel suddenly cries before sprinting ahead. His pink heart-shaped sunglasses fall from the top of his head into the sand when he jumps on top of a guy—almost making both of them stumble back.

“Sam! You’re here,” Mel yells, laughing joyfully, still tightly hugging a young, brawny guy with short black hair and aviator sunglasses.

“Of course I’m here, Mellie. I received your message while I was with my cousin, but I can’t stay away from you for too long,” Sam replies, displaying a celebrity megawatt, white-toothed smile.Mellielooks ecstatic at the words.

“Oh, there is that bright light again.” Kaiden pats me on the shoulder again while taking a drink from his can. “I guess he just decided to aim it at someone else.”

My teeth grind together at Kaiden’s words, but I shrug feigned indifference. Mel can direct his beaming smile at whoever he likes. I don’t have sole rights to it. And I don’t care who he fancies. I really don’t.

Rigidly walking toward Pete, I grab an empty plate from the table and let him unload the perfectly seared hamburgers on it. The aloof tattoo artist is a master at the grill. Pulling a sesame bun from the plastic bag, I stuff it with lettuce, pickles, a slice of tomato, and some barbecue sauce Jordan made. When I throw a glance Mel’s way, he’s walking toward me with his arm tucked under Sam’s bicep.

“I’m so happy you’re here! I missed you.”

“I have so many things to tell you. But first, tell me your bed is bigger than the lumpy one in your last apartment.” Sam eyes him hopefully.

“Same bed, eh?” Kaiden smirks at them, earning an eye roll from Mel.

“This is Sam,” he introduces the muscular guy to me and Kaiden. Mel’s eyes quickly meet mine and then focus on Sam again, who pushes his sunglasses on top of his head and smiles at us, extending his fisted hand. How old is this guy?I awkwardly fist bump his, maybe a bit too hard. The open friendliness filling his grey eyes rubs me the wrong way.

“Russel,” my voice comes out gruffer than I meant.

“And that’s Kaiden,” Mel says reluctantly.

“His ex,”—Kaiden pauses for effect—“roommate.” He fist bumps Sam’s hand making ak-powsound, earning Sam’s snort.

“Oh, I heard a lot about you from Mellie.”

“Don’t believe anything the little turd said,” Kaiden sniffs.

“Find a long, thick, sharp stick and…” Mel starts, but Kaiden cuts him off.

“Oookay. You know I’m a top, you pest, but I’d gladly show it to you once and for all.”
