“It won’t be long before they approve the antiviral medication they’ve been testing.”
“I’m aware. Is that a concern of yours? Tell me what’s on your heart, baby.”
“What happens next–” I admitted. I rested my face on the back of my hand.
“We both know what happens next, Kit. But, you want to hear it out loud?”
I nodded.
“We risk it all. We risk everything for a chance to love one another. You try your damndest not to break my heart. I try my damndest not to break yours.
“We navigate the ups. We navigate the downs. We navigate the uncertainty. We navigate the knowns. And, we choose each other each day. Every day we wake up.”
“It’s been a pleasure waking up next to you each morning. There’s an immense amount of joy in my spirit. This feels good. This feels right. I just worry that I’ve gotten far too comfortable with you here. One day you won’t be.
“You’ll be on the road. At games. In interviews. Practicing. Preparing for events. You know– living the life of a pro ball player.”
“And, you’ll be waiting for me to return, Kit, because no matter how long or how far… I will always return. The season is long, and it is challenging, but I am worth the way. If you don’t believe me yet, then I’ll be sure to prove myself before I get back on the road.”
“You already have,” I informed him. “I don’t doubt that you are. I haven’t since the moment you opened your mouth and saidmy name. It’s just that I miss you already and you’re not even gone.”
“I’m not,” he assured me, “I’m right here wondering if it’s too soon to ask you to be my woman who will one day become my wife and give me pretty daughters with orange undertones, perfect teeth, spiraled curls, and full faces of makeup just to have dinner with their father on a normal day.”
I caved. “Who raised you?”
His gentleness lulled me to places that felt good to my heart, my head, my body, and my soul.
“Felandro and Claire McClarren.”
“They did such a wonderful job.”
“Did they?”
“Um hm.”
“And your parents, so did they. I’ll likely spend the rest of my life paying them back as well.”
“My success and happiness is all the repayment they’ve ever needed. They said so themselves.”
He nodded. “Happiness–”
I waited with baited breath, anticipating what he was to say next.
“Do I contribute to that for you?” With a tilted head, Fohr questioned.
“You do. My happiness was intact when you showed up at my door. I thought maybe I was at my healthiest and happiest, but being here with you over the last two weeks have shown me that it was only a fraction of what was possible. I’m a happy woman, Fohr. But you make me a happier woman.”
“I want to make you the happiest woman.”
“And, how will you do that?” I posed, feeling a shift in my chest.
“I haven’t figured it out just yet, but you’ll be the first to know when I do.”
I chuckled, lightening the moment and buying into his sarcasm.
“Finish your breakfast, baby. We need to shower.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
