It was the one thing my brother and mother hated, but I loved it. I remember that for years, my mother tried everything to get me to stop, but here I was, still sucking my thumb. I leaned my head back on the wall, with my vice as I began to think about how foolish I looked sitting here. A part of me felt that it was too easy for Monfua to turn his back on me when it was he who said he wanted to try to make it work. Now that he had thrown his hands up, I didn’t want him to.
The Uber was taking too damn long, so long that I decided to give in and call my brother. The phone rang once, then twice, and he picked up. Foe stared into the camera with a blank face. I knew he was upset, and I felt bad for my actions. I didn’t even know where to start, but I knew I needed to start somewhere. “Get yo fucking thumb out yo mouth,” he gritted. “Fuck is wrong with you?”
I slowly eased my thumb out of my mouth. “I-I need your help.”
His brows narrowed in, “Where you at? It’s fucking pouring outside.”
“I-I need a ride,” I mumbled.
I could see him trying to inspect my background. I slowly stood up to allow him to catch a glimpse of where I was, “Wait, you at that nigga’s house? Man, Kia, I don’t have time for the—”
“He won’t let me in. I fucked up, Foe and he won’t let me in.”
My brother’s lip disappeared between his teeth as his nose flared before he just hung up. “Shit!”
I honestly didn’t know if he had given up on me as well. Over the past year, things had worsened, and with every passing day, I regretted all my decisions. From the first moment with Kirk to the moment I said I do to Monfua.
Another ten minutes passed before a beautiful woman stepped outside his door. She jumped when she saw me,“Ah!”she screamed. “You scared me,” she smiled.
The door opened wider, and Monfua stood there with no shirt and sweatpants.Did he fuck her?I thought I felt a little jealousy at the club, but now it wasn’t a feeling because I was. She opened her umbrella and stepped out into the rain, “Call me,” she said.
“He won’t!” I spat.
She quickly turned to look at me like she couldn’t believe what I said. “I said he won’t,” I repeated.
I spun toward Monfua, whose eyes locked with mine. “Really? You lock me out so you can fuck?”
He didn’t say a word as he tried to close the door, but this time my foot caught it before it closed. “Move your foot.”
“No! I thought—”
“You thought what? A nigga was going to kiss your ass. You thought you could treat me as you wanted, and I would move? Lakia, you got the game fucked up. I offered to make shit work.”
I moved closer, “But I-I just needed to sort shit out. We moved too fast!” I screamed.
He stepped closer now, towering over me. His eyes slowly traveled down and met mine. We gazed at each other, and right then, I knew I wanted him. “What were your intentions?” he grumbled.
I pulled my eyes away until I heard his voice. “Sukalati, eyes on me.”
Eyes on him.“Let me tell you what mine were. I want to taste that Suamalie Pussy. I wanted to piss your bitch ass brother off. Then the more I hung with you, the more I wanted you, but this shit I’m not for it. So again, what were your intentions?”
Crack of thunder.Jump.
I pulled my eyes away. “On me!” he spat.
Eyes on him.I blew out a sharp breath because locking eyes with him was tearing me apart. “I-I—”
I heard my name being called. “Kia!”
I knew it was my brother, but I didn’t want to let this piece of connection go.
Crack of thunder.Jump.
It was something brewing between Monfua and me. The way he was looking at me made my heart skip a beat. I wanted this man, and I knew, walking away, wasn’t something I could do.
“Lakia, bring yo ass on!” Foe shouted again.
Crack of thunder.Jump.
