Sukalati jumped right in. “Give her the house drink.”
I could see Chevy cut his eyes at her. I slammed the glass down, getting his attention, “Aht, aht,” I said.
He raised his brow. “How’s married life?”
I shrugged. “You tell me. You married, right?”
He smiled. “Oh, so now you’re the shit talker. Pretty boys get knocked on their asses too.”
Zaria’s head spun, “And thugs don’t get fucked when they cut up.”
I burst out laughing. Zaria had Chevy wrapped around her finger. I finished making drinks for everyone. I could see Chevy eyeing me, and I knew this wouldn’t be the last of the conversation. Zaria smiled. “This is good as hell! What’s in it?”
I winked at her. “It’s a—”
Chevy slammed the glass down on the counter. “Watch it nigga. This vegan pussy is taken.”
I shook my head because he was truly protective of Zaria. However, I understood because I felt the same about Lakia. Even when I was mad at her, I still found ways to make sure she was good. I glanced at the stage to see Foe, Harvey, and the stripper with the shiesty walk off together. The DJ played a nice ass tune, making the entire club go crazy. Everyone began dancing and drinking like the sun wasn’t about to come up in the next few hours. I poured Sukalati and me another drink before I came back to the other side of the bar.
Sukalati grinded all on me before a lady walked up. “Lakia, order me another gin and juice,” she slurred. She searched her purse before pulling out a pack of cigarettes. She packed the box, pulled one out, then looked at me. “Lighter?”
I swigged on my drink, “I don’t have one.”
The smell of weed cascaded up my nose, causing me to turn and see Foe walking up. He pulled his lighter from his pocket and lit her cigarette. “Monfua, this is our mother, Denna.”
I smiled. “Nice to meet you.”
She snarled at me. “Mm hmm. You didn’t want to light my cigarette. You’re fine, though. You—”
Lakia interrupted her by holding the drink to her mother’s face. When she saw Foe, she froze. I was waiting for havoc or some chaos. Denna turned to Foe, “Where yo daddy at? I need to talk to him,” she slurred.
I glanced at Lakia, who seemed uncomfortable with her mother’s actions. Denna guzzled down the gin and juice like a pro. “Myles!” she shouted.
That’s when she pulled the shirt of a man walking by. “I know you hear me!” she shouted.
Foe pulled the blunt from his lips. His face began to curl up, “Fuck you acting ignorant for? Huh!” he yelled.
I debated whether to step in, but the face of someone caught my attention. I glanced at Lakia, who stared at me curiously. “That nigga here,” I whispered in her ear.
“Huh?” she asked.
I saw Kirk walking around looking. I knew he was looking for Lakia while Dio and the guys were pushing Foe back. Lakia rushed toward her mother, trying to pull her mother’s arm, while Foe barked in her face like a dog. I tried to focus on them, but my gaze became fixed on Kirk. When he was close enough, I set my drink down and stepped up to him. “Fuck you, looking for?”
Kirk glanced at me. “I need you to move. Where is Lakia?”
“Busy what the fuck you care for? She’s married.”
“Yeah, with no ring.”
I couldn’t lie that shit stung, but it made me mad, so mad that I lost it. As one of the bottle girls walked by, I snatched the bottle and slammed it over his head. Kirk’s head flew back along with his body. That’s when I saw Zu backing up with Foe in his grasp while Foe was seething, going off. “Fuck you! You always fuck shit up for me!” he shouted.
Harvey was in front of them, holding her hand out. Before I knew it, they were out of the club. Kirk held his head as he stumbled back. Lakia was still taming her ghetto ass momma, and I was about to dig in Kirk’s ass.
LAKIA
I knew this night was going to fucking hell. The moment my mother stepped into the building and saw my brother’s dad, I knew it was going to be some shit. All I wanted to do was have a good night with my brother and his friends, be in a good space with Harvey, and be with my man. However, what I got was complete chaos, and the only person I felt bad for was Foe.
My mom’s glassy eyes flickered as I was finally able to get her away from big Myles. The obsession she had for a man who didn’t want her explained why I was the way I had been for Kirk. “That man he—”
