Looking up at the ceiling, he rubs the back of his neck. “I’m sorry.”

“You apologize too much.”

“Just seems to happen with you.”

“Well don’t because it’s fine. I’ll video chat with them later. Roman could have given me the heads-up. That’s his fault.”

“Where do they live anyway?”

“Trappers Ridge, North Carolina.”

“Never heard of it.”

“Most people haven’t.”

“When’s the last time you saw him?”

“It’s been about a year.”

“That’s tough.”

“Yeah, but he loves it,” I say, clearing my throat and hopping off the bed. “I’m going to shower and then we can go, okay?”

“Sure.”

BODHI

My fingers tap against the steering wheel in the parking lot of the gas station. Ella hadn’t even stirred when I’d pulled over. She’d looked worse when she got out of the shower, her eyes red and puffy, those beautiful brown orbs never meeting mine as she scurried around the room, packing the few things she’d taken out.

She hadn’t even fought me when I’d taken the keys, promptly passing out as soon as we’d gotten on the highway.

“When’s the last time you saw him?”

“It’s been about a year.”

Would I let a year go by without seeing Mason? Hell, until he was with Lana, we’d barely spent a night not under the same roof.

The thought lands like a lead balloon in my stomach as I glance over to the passenger seat where she’s curled up fast asleep. She looks nothing like I did yesterday, the sheer anxiety sending me into a spiral that had landed me in bed and praying for relief.

She’d taken care of me.

And then let me touch her…the memory burned into my soul like a brand.

God, she felt so good.

I should just get her home and hope that she can make it back to see him but…

I look at her again, her brows knitted together and her lips pursed like even in her dreams she can’t escape the sadness of missing him.

Fuck it.
