Mia shook her head to clear it and held up a hand. “Wait. How did you…? I never told you about…”
He chuckled softly. “Are you going to let me in, beautiful, or make me stand in the hallway all evening?”
“No. I mean yes. Come in.” She backed up to let him in, still in shock. Before she could blink, he kicked the door shut, pulled her into his arms and slanted his mouth over hers in a hungry kiss that stole her breath. His tongue swirled around hers, tasting, teasing. When it ended, Dwight gave her the smile that had made her weak from the night they met.Hallelujah! No pullout sofa.
Chapter 2
Any doubts Dwight had about this trip faded the moment Mia opened the door to him. And the kiss confirmed what he already knew—he’d fallen in love with her. Like he’d told his brother, time didn’t matter. Only Mia. He placed his bag on a nearby chair and scanned the living room. “This is nice. May I have a tour?”
“Sure.” Mia said. “Over there is the kitchen, as you can see.” She gestured toward the bedroom located on the other side of the wall from the living room.
His gaze went directly to the king bed when they entered the room. “One bed?”
She stared at him for a moment. “Yes.”
A smile curved his lips. “Perfect. Mind if I look around in here?”
“Of course.”
Leaving her at the door, he crossed the room and opened one door that led to a bathroom with a shower and tub, then the other—a closet. Dwight walked over to the sliding glass door leading to the balcony and stepped outside. He noticed it could be accessed from the living room, as well. The high floor afforded them a perfect view of the ocean. He shifted slightly when Mia stood next to him. “How did you find this place?”
“It’s the timeshare my parents owned. We used to come every summer.”
Dwight pressed a kiss to her temple. She’d told him about losing her parents. “It must have been hard for you to come back here.”
Mia gave him a small smile. “It was for a long time. I just started coming again five years ago. This is the first time I’ve been here with anyone other than my friend, Alana,” she added.
As crazy as it sounded, the knowledge that no other man had slept in the bed with her made him feel better. It was irrational to think that she didn’t have a past, considering he’d never laid eyes on her until a few weeks ago. “It’s a beautiful place.”
“It is. You never answered my question.”
Dwight folded his arms. “Which one?”
“How you knew about the auction.”
He chuckled. “I overheard you talking on the phone to someone who was telling you how many bids you’d racked up in one day, did a little research and placed a bid.” What he didn’t say was that he’d waited until just before the auction closed and placed a bid that far exceeded the highest one.
“I don’t know why you didn’t just tell me instead of using that crazy name, BigSexySanta37.” Mia rolled her eyes, but was smiling. “Somehow, you don’t strike me as someone who’d use a name like that. You seem more…I don’t know…serious. I’m not saying you aren’t fun to be around because you are. But…”
“I know what you mean. It was my brother’s doing, and he’s far more outgoing than I am.”
“Does your brother work in construction, too?”
“No. He heads up the investment firm our father started over twenty years ago.”
If the firm had survived two decades, it must be doing well. “It’s a lucrative business. I’m surprised you didn’t follow that path.”
Dwight shook his head. “I’ve never wanted to sit behind a desk and wear a suit and tie every day. I helped my brother for a couple of months last year, and it was two months too long.” He smiled inwardly remembering all the fireworks that occurred when a former employee impersonated his now sister-in-law and tried to divert money from a client’s account. “I like working with my hands and being outside.”
Mia stepped back and eyed him from head to toe. “Well, you won’t get any complaints from me. Constructiondefinitelydoes a body good.”
Laughing, he shook his head. “Come here, girl.”
Smiling, she shrugged. “I’m just sayin’.” She leaned her head against his chest and he wrapped his arms around her. “I still can’t believe you’re here. Had me all worried about possibly having to spend my holiday with some weirdo. Just wrong.”
“If I’d told you, then it wouldn’t have been a surprise.”
She lifted her head. “Oh, I’m surprised. Relieved, too.”
