“Then it was all worth it. I couldn’t imagine some other man being here doing all the things I want to do with you.” Dwight looked forward to midnight strolls on the beach, watching the sunset together and just spending more uninterrupted time with her. He’d never had a long-distance relationship before and found it harder than he originally imagined.
She studied him. “But you said you were okay with it.”
“I only said those things to throw you off, and because I knew I’d be the one spending the next four nights with you.”
Mia backed out of his arms and stood at the railing. “Why? We’ve only been dating a few weeks and we don’t even live in the same city. Most men wouldn’t consider that anything deep.”
“I’m not most men,” Dwight said. He braced his forearms on the railing next to her and stared at the water. “Have you ever met someone, shared a kiss and knew they’re the one?”
She laughed. “Like love at first kiss? It could just as well be chemistry, attraction, pure lust, or—”
“Kismet.”
Mia whipped her head in his direction. “You’re serious,” she whispered.
Drawing her back into his embrace, he held her gaze. “Are you saying you don’t believe it can happen?”
“Honestly Dwight, I’ve kissed so many frogs, I don’t know what I believe anymore.”
“Then maybe it’s time you kissed someone other than a frog, and I intend to use the next few days to make you a believer.” He kissed her softly. “Did you have anything planned while we’re here?” he asked, changing the subject. She still looked skeptical and they had time.
“No.”
“Then do you mind if I find a couple of things for us to do?”
“Not at all, as long as whatever you plan doesn’t include me having to be up at the crack of dawn.”
Dwight laughed. “Not a morning person.”
“Absolutely not.” She shuddered. “Don’t tell me you’re one ofthosepeople.”
Still smiling, he shook his head. During the times they spent together, they’d stayed in bed until late morning. “Okay. I won’t tell you. Hey, I work in construction, so I have to be up early,” he added when she made a face. “Not everybody works in a bar and can sleep in.”
Mia placed a hand on her hip. “I don’t workinthe bar, I workatthe bar. In the office.” A smile tugged at her lips. “Safe from spilling drinks on the customers.”
“I have to say it was the most interesting way to meet someone. But I wouldn’t recommend making it a habit.”
“Shut up.” She punched him in the arm, then shook her hand. “Ow! What is your arm made of? Steel?”
Dwight winked at her. “Something like that.” He’d always been serious about fitness and continued the same running and weightlifting regimen he’d started as a teen. He hoped the resort had a place for him to get a couple of workouts in. “And I promise not to plan anything before noon.”
“Thank you. Are you hungry? We can go get something.”
“Yeah, I am. Then you can show me around.”
“I’d love to.” Mia came up on tiptoe and kissed him. “You might want to change out of those jeans, though. It’s a little warm out,” she said as they went back inside through the living room entrance.
“Definitely not those fifty-something temperatures I left in Sacramento.” Dwight grabbed his bag and headed for the bedroom. “I’ll be out in a second.” After changing into a pair of shorts, sleeveless tee and sandals, he took a moment to send a text to his brother to let him know he’d made it safely. Dwayne would pass the word to the rest of the family and keep their mother from worrying. He found Mia standing in front of the glass door seemingly deep in thought. “You okay, babe?”
She turned to face him. “I’m fine. Ready?”
“Yep.” He followed her out to the elevator and down to the lobby.
“There are a few restaurants on the property and every night there’s a theme night. I think tonight is the barbeque cookout. They have ribeyes, T-bones, filet mignon, barbeque or teriyaki chicken, lobster, and several sides, as well as dessert.”
His stomach growled. “Say no more. I was sold when you said steak.”
She chuckled. “I figured you would be. I ate a couple hours ago, but I’m definitely having some of that lobster and maybe a bite or two of whatever steak you choose. And did I mention that I purchased the unlimited plan?”
