Mikhail laughed. “Just try and keep an open mind. And don’t torment the captain like you usually do with most women. She could easily drop your ass into the ocean on the way back.”

“Ouch. Very cold.”

“And very true.”

I laughed as I ended the call, sitting back in my seat as she tipped the nose of the plane, heading for our cruising elevation.

A six-and-a-half-hour flight. I’d go stir crazy by the time I stepped onto solid ground.

As I nursed the drink, I had a clear and direct line of view of the beautiful blonde. She had a story to tell.

We all did.

Secrets and internal darkness that we protected from everyone, including our family and friends. There were always telltale signs, traits much like when someone became enraged or annoyed. I was the master of observation, a trait most Dmitriyev children possessed.

The few minutes spent with her indicated her life was in shambles.

While Captain Zimmerman portrayed a buttoned-up professional, her body language screamed an entirely different story.

How I longed to peel away her austere exterior, freeing the darkness inside.

With the drink in my hand, I licked the rim. It was never a good idea to mix business with pleasure, but when had I ever been one to abide by rules or laws for that matter?

I certainly had a few hours to kill and I couldn’t think of anyone I’d rather spend the time with than a beautiful woman.

CHAPTER 5

Fallon

Wow.

Gorgeous.

A rough Russian god wrapped in an Armani suit with a mischievous smile and dancing green eyes. Then there was the accent to die for.

At least I’d have eye candy for the trip.

I resisted groaning as I studied the gauges. I’d made such an impetuous decision leaving Chicago in the middle of the night, urged to return to Miami. At least we were close to the Saba Island Airport. I was shocked how quickly the time had flown. Soon, I’d touch down on a tropical island in the Lesser Antilles, Saba a location I’d never been to and one I’d had about fifteen minutes to read up on. Flying the plane wasn’t the problem or landing, as difficult as I heard it to be.

Trying to keep from losing my mind was.

What was I doing here?

Running further away in hopes Antonio and his goons would leave me the fuck alone.

Pretending as if my life wasn’t a complete fucking mess.

Hungering for a man I’d just been introduced to a few hours before.

Hell, I’d jumped on a plane so fast the moment I’d been able to leave Chicago I’d almost left my passport and airline credentials. Thank God that hadn’t occurred since this gig was extraordinarily profitable.

I’d only remained in Chicago through the release of my mother’s and stepfather’s bodies, the funeral well attended, people mourning the loss. So many people I didn’t know. There’d been monsters lurking in the shadows, and who’d stood right by my side acting as if he gave a damn? Antonio.

The fucking asshole.

I touched my face, fighting the anger and hatred, sadness that often became overwhelming. The moment I’d found a decent real estate agent, I’d jumped ship, refusing to play games with the Bruni Syndicate. I’d heard rumors of how powerful they’d become, something I’d managed to avoid for well over a year and a half when I’d made an impetuous decision to move to Miami, certain I’d been in love.

I’d only been home discharged from the military for a couple of months before I realized my mother’s depiction of life with Luis had been either a fantasy she wanted to believe or was based on his manipulation of her.
