He chuckled. “I’m glad my little gift at least tried to put up a fight.”
He plucked the birthday hat off his head and put it on mine instead.
We both looked at the door as it opened.
“Hey, baby.” I greeted Reena as she entered the apartment.
She looked around, taking everything in carefully before walking further inside.
“What’s up, Arris?”
“What’s up?” Arris finished snapping the hat on my head before he turned toward her.
He dapped her up and my eyes went back and forth between them.
“What y’all up to?”
“Celebrating Jayme’s birthday,” Arris said. “Blake found the best possible birthday gift for his mom and couldn’t wait to give it to her.” He gestured to the capybara seated at the table. “I decided to just do the whole gift giving shit tonight.”
“Oh. Okay. Cool.” Reena shifted on her feet.
Arris smirked and I cut my eyes at him.
“Yeah, but I’m heading out.” He walked over to Blake. “Bye, man.” Arris kissed the side of Blake’s head and gave him a one-armed hug. “I love you.”
“I love you too.”
“Be good and don’t eat all your mom’s cake, alright?”
“Alright.”
“Thank you.”
“Welcome.”
Arris walked over and gave me a one-armed hug.
“Happy early birthday, Jaybird. I hope you have a great night, and if you need me, call me.”
“Yes, sir.”
Arris grabbed his cake and headed out.
I watched him leave, and as soon as the door slammed, I turned to Reena because I knew for a fact it was about to be some stupid shit.
“So, that’s what we doing?” Reena asked.
“What does that even mean, Reena?”
“Wasn’t Arris just over here putting a bed up or some shit and now I come home tonight from work and y’all having a whole family moment.”
“Were you going to put the bed up?” I asked but didn’t wait for a response. “No. And honestly, neither was I; so I don’t know what you expected there. Then, tonight, we didn’t have any sortof family plans. Arris had Blake for the day. Blake picked out a gift and card for me. Arris bought it for him and brought it to me.”
“Blake picked out the flowers and cake too?”
“It’s my generic favorite cake, and no, the flowers and earrings were from Arris.”
“Earrings?” she asked.
