Damien knocks on the door. “Villainous is here.”

“Send him in.”

He nods, then disappears from the bedroom.

Aiden walks in with a cigarette in his mouth, and I follow him to the living room.

I’m not in the mood to talk, so if it’s not important, I’m telling him to get out. I tuck my hands into my pockets.

“Why the fuck are you here this late at night?”

“While you were moping about your wife, I was finally able to get through to Maya, and she told me Celeste might not attack because he and his brothers didn’t get along. She hasn’t seen him in years.”

Celeste is supposed to be the next don of thefamigliafor the Irish mob.

“Why hasn’t she seen him in years?”

“She wouldn’t tell me, but she says he’s most likely not going to strike because he was waiting for Cashel to be killed so he can be the don.” He runs his fingers through his hair. “So the war with the Irish mob is up in the air.” He sighs. “The underbosses are labeling you weak, Cayden. They know you’re divorcing Roselyn and they are questioning you as a don.”

Honestly, I couldn’t give two shits what they think as long as they aren’t planning a secret attack against me, and stick to their roles. Then we won’t have a problem. Aiden told me once that some of the rules that we enforce are stupid, and he’s right.

He needs to leave so I can start my nightly staking routine.

I nod and lie on the couch.

“Are you going to continue to keep Maya as your wife.”

“Honestly, I don’t know.”

I doubt he’ll tell me what happened between him and Maya in the past, but I ask anyway.

“What did she do to you for you wanting to seek revenge?”

Anger blazes in his eyes, then they soften. “You really are sulking like a bitch over a woman you let go. You know what you should do?” He deflects my question.

“No, and at this moment, I don’t give a fuck about what you think,” I snap.

It’s wrong to take my anger out on my brother, but I’m hurting right now.

“Go after her and ask for a second chance. I’m pretty sure she loves your fucked-up ass. I don’t know why.” He rolls his eyes. “I’ve never seen you as happy as you were with her.”

“It’s more complicated than it seems, Aiden.” I exhale. “She deserves someone better than me, and she needs to live her life. She is young and needs to see the world. If I hold on to her like I did Shelby, then she’s going to resent me.”

“Roselyn is not Shelby. You’re making a big mistake,” he tells me. “You should tell her to come home so you can talk. You deserve to be happy and loved.”

I cock my head to the side. “Since when have you been pro-relationship?”

“I’m tired of your fucking moping. Get your head out of your ass and stop being stubborn.”

It pains me that I’m not with Roselyn, but I don’t want our relationship to be toxic anymore. I’m sticking to the plan and waiting for her to come herself. If she doesn’t come home to me, then I’ll wait. I’ll wait for her until my last breath.

One Month Later…

Iupload a picture of me lying in bed with the caption “Missing him and home.” DMV91 hearts the picture immediately and comments with kissing emojis. I know this is Devious hiding under a fake profile because Marla told me. Apparently, mafia men don’t do social media, which I already knew. He hearts every picture I upload, and he’ll comment on how beautiful I look, but he won’t send me a message. He only responds to messages if I initiate it. Nausea settles in my stomach as homesickness takes over.

Marla waltzes in with a thin white towel wrapped around her head. She hops on the bed next to me and removes the towel, tossing it onto the floor and tugging her hair into a ponytail. She spent the night last night with me, and we watched the movieThe Girl on the Train.
