By the time we finished loading our bags and snacks into my truck, I suggested we stop and get lunch at a diner just outside of town. Kat went along with everything, not once pointing out that I was, in fact, stalling.

Now, it’s just after five o’clock and we’ve been silently sitting in the car for five minutes while I try to find the strength to go in. Kat reaches over the center console to place a comforting hand on my arm.

I soften at her touch, letting out a heavy sigh before turning my head to her.

“We can think of something. I’m here for whatever you need this weekend and if what is needed is a reason to not be here, then I have a few different ideas bouncing around.”

I reach up with my free hand, placing mine over hers and squeezing gently while dropping my head back against the headrest.

“Thank you for coming.”

She smiles brightly at me, causing my heart to leap at her beauty. My gaze drops to her lips and the urge to kiss takes over.

Resting my elbow on the center console, I reach across to run a hand along her cheeks. She leans into the touch, watching me closely as her smile softens.

“I mean, you’re welcome I guess. I’m actually just here for the free food.” She jokes and the laugh that escapes takes me by surprise. There’s no hesitation as I finally close the distance between us.

My lips meet hers and all the tension and anxiety about this weekend is momentarily forgotten. She melts into me, kissing me back and opening up without pause when my tongue passes over her lips.

It’s been almost two weeks since we first had sex, and no matter how many times we’ve been together since then, I just can’t seem to get enough of her.

Even now, with all the stress and anxiety about this weekend, having Kat around is enough to make me feel like everything will be okay. She calms the waring voices in my head, grounding me and keeping me sane without saying a single word.

When I pull back, Kat smiles softly at me.

“Ready?” She questions softly and my stomach drops.

Swallowing thickly, I nod once, even as every inch of my mind is screaming in protest. Kat reaches up, taking my hand in hers and squeezing once.

“If it helps, we’re here late enough thattheyare all just starting the rehearsal dinner. Should lessen the chances of awkward bump-ins.” Her words have some of the uneasiness fading. Nodding, I reluctantly let her hand go and turn to get out of the truck.

Kat turns to protest when I grab her bags with mine but relents when I let her grab the garment bags holding her dress and my suit. She waits next to the truck, staring up at me.

“You sure you wanna do this?” She asks once more.

“Nope. But we’re already here.” I force a smile onto my face. “Why don’t we go get checked in, order room service, and not come out ‘til morning?”

“You had me at room service.” Kat laughs and it’s that sound alone that gets me moving.

“Can I ask you something?”

I raise a brow at Kat. “Technically you just did.”

She rolls her eyes, swatting at my arm gently before reaching for another French fry. A faint blush spreads across her cheeks as she takes a bite, making me curious to what’s on her mind.

Grabbing her wine glass, she sits back and stares at the view of the small waterfalls that we have from our upgraded suit. When we got to the check-in counter, the kid watching the desk admitted to messing up our reservation.

Apparently, my mom had originally booked us in a suite with two queen beds. But earlier today when another couple checked in, they asked for a room change. The kid, not wanting to argue, gave them the room that had two beds versus one.

Now the only room left was the falls view suite with one king bed.

He had been so relieved when both Kat and I assured him it was perfectly fine.

Based on the way the poor kid talked about the older couple, I took a guess that he had the pleasure of dealing with my Aunt Alex and Uncle Phil. The two of them went together like baking soda and vinegar ninety percent of the time. They probably booked the original room during the rare one percent that they were getting along, only to get here and be at each other’s throats.

So naturally, Kat and I agreed to take full advantage of the space we got in the upgrade. We ordered an array of foods to share, along with a bottle of white wine from a local winery and set up on the balcony to enjoy the view.
