He bristled, but a smile caught on the corners of his lips. “I know to which creature you refer, and I find it mildly insulting. For the record, you nearly barreled over me inside your dormitory. I should have been terrified of the hooded female.”
She laughed. “I didn’t run into you. I was trying to avoid the big, bad wolf lurking my hallways.”
“You called me a puppy dog.” A mischievous glint shone in his eyes. “And perhaps the encounter was intentional on my part.” His face grew serious. “I sensed it before I measured your abilities—the draw to you. I knew you were mine the moment I saw you, every inch of your face hidden in shadow.”
She sighed and encircled his chest with her arms. “Pushy and possessive. At least I know what my future holds.”
Epilogue
Sensing a presence, Isle turned in the field of flowers where she was walking and saw a striking, familiar man with laughing gray eyes making his way to her.
He reached her and pulled her into his arms. “Husband. Where have you been?” she said.
He touched her brow in an affectionate gesture. “Attending to politics in heaven. How is our daughter?”
“Beautiful. Headstrong.”
He raised an eyebrow. “That is to be expected, considering her mother.”
“Which part? The beauty or the stubbornness?”
“Both.” He grinned.
Isle narrowed her eyes. “You were gone a very long while, husband. Our daughter is grown.”
“You well know I keep tabs on both of you.”
“Were you keeping tabs on her when she was plunging to her death in the Great Ravine?” She shook her head, her lips compressed. “None of this would have happened if you’d given me any warning about the future.”
“You know I can’t do that.” He looked at her with remorse. “When I brought her and Jasper to the Earth realm, I could not share with you what was in store for her—boss’s orders. You were there to save her at the ravine, and that is what matters. The prince was there too.”
Isle shook her head. “That awfulIce Prince. How could you not consult me before making him her fated mate?”
“Because you would not have agreed?” he said, sending her a seductive grin.
Isle’s mouth parted. “I cannot believe this. You return after hundreds of years, mate my daughter to the son of Casone, and try to woo me with your charms?”
His pale eyes glimmered. “Is it working?”
Isle let out a harsh sigh. “Of course it’s working. I’ve missed you. But you have much to atone for, leaving me trapped in that ravine while our daughter suffered in the Earth realm.”
His pale gaze grew serious. “You needed to be there to save her when the time came.”
She glowered at him. “Our daughter suffered.Isuffered! True, it went by in a flash after the first week or so, but I missed our daughter’s adolescence!”
“I’m told that can be a good thing.”
Isle pursed her lips and fought back a smile. It was impossible to remain angry with her husband. “Jasper said she wasn’t an easy teenager. And she’s rather defiant as an adult. I will allow that those years weren’t the worst ones to have missed, but you are not forgiven.”
Kushiel picked her up and started off.
“What are you doing?” she said.
“Taking you to our secret cabin. I have much groveling and pleasing to do.” He winked, and her belly fluttered.
She crossed her arms and made a sound in the back of her throat. “It will take more than an hour or two in your arms to make up for your absence.”
He dipped his head and kissed her passionately, his gentle lips coaxing an alarmingly aroused response in her. “Then I’d better make it last. For I forgot to mention that our daughter carries the Ice Prince’s child.”
