Alle pouted. She liked to think she could be more imaginative and less predictable than that. Besides, a spanking would be primarily for her, not for him. Not that he didn’t enjoy dishing them, but there were other things he liked more. Things they’d not really explored. She fished her phone out of her pocket and scrolled back through their text messages to the end of the previous month. “What about if we did this?” She turned the screen so he could see.

Spook: I want to hunt you down and shove you up against the rock face.

Take everything I want from you.

Work you with my fingers.

Leave the imprints of them on your thighs.

Get right inside of you.

Possess you.

Make you scream and come, even though you know you shouldn’t like it.

Leave you with your undies torn.

He jerked his chair back from the table. For a moment, she thought he’d rocket out of it and disappear. Instead, he leaned back in its embrace, and let his head fall back so that he was gazing up at the faerie-lit rafters. “I’m not sure that’s… It’s probably not a good idea.”

Alle leaned across the table towards him. “Be honest with me. Is it something you want? If it was just late-night mutterings and shit talk, then that’s fine, but… It wasn’t, was it, Spook? This is something you actually want, that you fantasise about doing—”

He sat straight again. Though his fist rose to cover his mouth, his eyes were hot and liquid, burning with two bright hearts. “Okay, yeah, it is. It’s something that I want… that I think about. But, Alle—”

“Then let me give you it.”

“I… I don’t know if that’s a good idea.”

She left her chair and circled the table to reach him, wrapped her arms around him from behind, burying her face in the sweet scent of his hair. “You know I’ll probably love it too, right? I like it when you chase me, and I like it when you’re rough.”

His shoulders stiffened beneath her palms, so she set to massaging them. “And now you’re going to spin me a line about not trusting yourself. Don’t.”

His mouth opened, then closed again.

“It’s not yourself you don’t trust. It’s me.”

“Alle, that’s—”

“The truth,” she said firmly, thankful she managed to keep her hurt out of the statement. “It’s the truth. You don’t trust me enough to really let go like that. And there’s nothing I can do about it, other than offer you reassurances. It’s up to you, Spook. You’re the only one who can make the decision. I’m offering you this, and I think we’ll both have a good time, but it’s up to you. You love me, and that’s amazing. But, to do this, you have to trust me too. So, the question is, can you?”

They walked after they left the restaurant. Went up to the standing stones, and puttered about as night stole over the island, hardly speaking much. The journey back took them through the ravine. It was a lonely stretch of the already ruggedly and exceedingly lonely island. The walls towered high on either side, almost to the point of overlapping. Erosion had carved numerous dead-ends and shallow hollows, it was dark and terrifying, but possessed of fantastical beauty too. Walking through it raised prickles all over Alle’s skin. She kept a tight hold of Spook’s hand. He said nothing, until they were out the other side and headed onto the clifftops. The tide was far out, leaving a vast and craggy landscape of rock pools stretched before them.

“We never told anyone where we were going when we left the recording studio,” she said.

“They’ll have worked it out, or are you saying it because you think we should head back there?”

“No, the track will wait until tomorrow. Besides, I’m not sure I’m ready for another round of Xane’s sexy groans yet.”

“Yeah, me neither.” They headed back to their cave home instead, where Alle took a bath, and left Spook to his thoughts.

It was a little after ten when Alle trekked along the beach in search of him. She found Spook perched on an outcropping halfway up the cliffside, that took her several moments of struggling to navigate in order to settle in beside him. “Hey,” she said, leaning her head against his shoulder. “I was going to head to bed. I wondered if you were going to join me?”

“In a bit.”

“I feel like I’ve pushed you into another doom loop.”
