“I think I just died for a few seconds,” she said, with complete seriousness.

He let out a short chuckle and wiped his face with one of the towels.

She sat up and pulled him to her lips. Caught up in the moment, she almost blurted out,I love you, Brett Navarro, but quickly amended it to, “I’m crazy about you, Brett Navarro, and I’m going to show you just how much—” She stopped when she felt the wetness covering his shaft.

He chuckled again. “You already did. Do you think I could withstand those noises you were making? I think I climaxed before you did.”

Embarrassed, she dropped her chin into her chest. “Was I loud?”

“Not so much. It was the moaning that did me in.” He wrapped his arms around her and rolled onto the cushions, cradling her to his chest. With one hand, he covered their nakedness with a towel, and they both stared up at the clear blue sky. He sighed. “This is really nice.”

Her body may have been lounging in a cabana on the beach, but her head was still up in those clouds, and it would be for a long time. She had no idea what just happened to her. It was some kind of out-of-body experience that left her almost shaken. Whatever Brett just did to her affected, not just her body, but her mind and her heart.

They stayed in the cabana for a long time and actually dozed off for a few minutes before they dressed and ventured outside of the protective curtains. Luckily, there wasn’t an audience and their little rendezvous seemed to have gone undetected.

Kira sat in the sand and rested her forearms on her knees and stared into the ocean while the warm breeze blew her hair around her face. It was serene and peaceful. Birds flew leisurely over the water, dipping and gliding across the sky. She felt lighthearted and free, relaxed, and de-stressed from the heavy workload that usually weighed her down. The tension in the back of her neck was gone, and calmness filled her spirit.

Brett sat next to her. His firm hand covered her hip and tugged her closer to him. His lips tickled her ear with a kiss, and he whispered, “Are you ready to try again?”

“Again?” she asked, raising her brows with surprise.

“I meant, are you ready to continue with your surf lesson?”

“Oh.” She laughed a little. “We’re still doing that?”

He pulled her to her feet and over to where their surfboards lay in the sand. “We’re not leaving until you at least catch one wave.”

She reluctantly conceded. “Let’s try this again.” She positioned herself on the board like before, only this time she was more limber and confident that she wouldn’t fall. She paid attention to Brett’s instructions, and she waited for his countdown before she popped up on the board. She actually stood for a second or two before she teetered and fell. Brett, who was standing on his surfboard as graceful as a cat on a ledge, caught her in his arms.

“Be careful,” he said.

“I thought I had it this time. Why is it so hard?”

“It’s all about balance. If you can walk around in those heels all day, you can stand on a surfboard barefoot. Try it again.”

After another half dozen tries, she finally managed to spring to her feet and stay on the surfboard without falling. She stood with her arms out to steady her balance, teetering slightly but in control. “I’m doing it! I’m surfing!” Tired of wasting time on the sand, she picked up her board and ran into the water.

“Slow down!” he called after her. “Wait for me!”

She continued running and laughed over her shoulder as she looked back at him. Really, she was only teasing him. She had no intention of attempting to ride a wave without him. In truth, she was a little nervous. A wave could crash over her head like a cinderblock. The surfboard could knock her unconscious, and she could drown. And, let’s not forget the sharks. She abruptly stopped running. What the hell was she doing out here? As she stood perfectly still and second guessed her decision to learn how to surf, Brett caught up to her.

“Why’d you stop? The way you were going, I thought I was going to have to charter a boat to catch up to you.”

“I don’t know about this. I could get hurt. Or killed.”

“We’re not at Pipe. These are ankle busters.”

She blinked at him. “I don’t know what either of those things are. Which means, I’m not ready.”

“Don’t overthink it. You’ll be fine.”

She gave him a cautious look.

“Just one wave. That’s it. Then we can go back to the hotel. At least you’ll be able to tell people you surfed.”

She was looking forward to the bragging rights. No one would expect a city girl like herself to surf.I can do this, she reassured herself, and then nodded at him. They straddled their boards and paddled out pretty far, which made her unsure. The beach looked miles away, and she began to worry about the depth of the ocean and what lurked beneath. “Are you sure there are no sharks out here?”

“I never said there weren’t any sharks. Actually, I think I specifically said that therearesharks out here.”
