Now I wondered if that would even be possible.

“I’m desperate now, Levi. Tell me what to do.”

“Desperate, huh? Normally, I would think that’s pretty fucking hot. I don’t know about Jakob, though. I picked up on a little bit about him, but I don’t know what he’s into.”

I rolled my eyes. Like I said, I should’ve known better than to think an intelligent conversation with a Larkin Lion was even possible.

“Come on, bro, do you want to win Jakob back or not?” Levi asked.

“Of course I do. I swear to you, I don’t think I can live without him.”

“Then tell him that.”

“What, are you serious?”

“Of course I am. You’re not going to convince him by sayingpretty please with sprinkles on top, are you?”

“No way, man. It’s just that I worry I really might’ve fucked up this time.”

“Oh yeah, I know what that’s like.”

“So, it’s happened to you too, huh?”

He sputtered and waved a hand, saying, “It happens to me nine times before breakfast every day.”

“That’s very encouraging.”

An ear-to-ear smile appeared on Levi’s face like he honestly didn’t know sarcasm when he heard it.

“Problem is, I worry there’s no coming back from this. He thinks I hurt him on purpose and that’s not all that far from the truth.”

Levi stroked his chin like an intellectual steeped in thought.

“There’s always a way back,” Levi said. “There’s never a point of no return. If there were, Quinn would’ve kicked me to the curb a long time ago.”

“Are you serious?”

“Of course I’m serious. Do you think I go around admitting fault for much of anything for no reason?”

“I guess you’ve got a point there.”

I hoped he would finally say something that would remind me of why I came to him in the first place. I wasn’t holding my breath, but I could definitely hope.

For a moment, I worried I would get emotional. Seriously. Of all the moments for a serious feeling of despair to hit, why in front of Levi Dunn? Why in front ofanyof the Larkin Lions?

But especially that meathead Levi.

“You gonna be okay?” Levi asked.

“No, man, I don’t think so. I never thought I’d be so upset over another guy.”

“And you never thought you’d love sucking dick, but you do, don’t you? You reallydo!”

He smiled and elbowed my ribs like he honestly expected me to go along with that.

“I love him,” I said, “more than anything else in the whole wide world. I don’t think I can live without him, and that’s a fact.”

“So, tell him that.”
