“Because of his beautiful heart,” she murmurs.

“Yeah, maybe you are right,” I agree with her. “A heart like that is so strong.”

That’s not something I would normally say, especially if Leander was listening, but it’s true. The boy is pure in so many ways.

“Anyway, we should keep going,” Brooke says, with a sigh. “I don’t want to be away from him and Key for too long.”

“Yes ma’am.”

Brooke, Key, and Leander have only been on their own for what, three, four days, but it seems like they’ve already tight.

Action Jackson is part of my crew now—who’d have guessed it.

LEANDER

Iopen my eyes and the sun hits me in the face. Ooph! My fucking head. And my mouth—the taste in it makes it seem like I've been sucking on a nickel all night.

Fuck, my jaw hurts too. Maybe I took a right-hook? But who punched me? I’ve definitely had fists swung at me before, but no one has ever made contact like this.

I groan and rub my chin. My hand drags across a field of stubble.

Fuck, Leander, you are a mess.

A voice beside me. “Leander?” It’s a somewhat familiar, gravelly Irish accent.

My throat is swollen and dry, and I need water badly. I feel an arm behind my back, helping me up, and then a bottle is held to my lips.

“Just a few sips to start.”

The world tilts. Shit, I’m going to…

I think I passed out.

This time when I wake up, my mind is a lot clearer. I know where I am—the island. I remember what happened. I know who I need.

“Key?” I rasp. “Daisy?”

A hand on my forehead, stroking the hair off my face.

“I’m here. Try and sit up and have some more water.”

For Daisy I’ll try anything.

Sitting up makes my head pain worse, but I’m so thirsty I don’t care. Again a plastic bottle is brought up to my lips, this time as I drink I open my eyes.

Daisy looks back at me. Her sweet face makes me smile.

“Oww!”

“What hurts?” she asks.

“Everything—my jaw, my head.”

“Good thing you have a thick skull,” says a voice. It’s deep and deeply familiar.

Rex.

Rex’s face comes into view. My focus sways in and out for a moment, but it’s definitely Rex. “Hey.”
