“For sure,” I say. Rex is in no mood to slow down.

Gray grunts in agreement. “Gotta mark our trail so we can find our way back. We’ll need a lot of this going forward.” He waves his arms at the plane contents.

When Harvey sits up, Rex tells him to take the water bottles and fill them.

I go outside to pee. There is something that looks like lychees on a nearby bush. I peel off the skin and take a bite. Yes! A little further out, I also find more coconuts. I take the hoard back to the others. I watch Gray dragging some heavy metal piping; he’s wincing as he works.

 “How is the shoulder today?”

He drops the pipe and shows me. It’s swollen and bruised.

“Christ on a cross, that looks painful,” I say, and hand him a lychee.

 “It’s fine.”

 Sure, Mr. Stoical.

He frowns further. “Really, it’s fine. What’s this? A lychee?” I nod and he grins. “Thanks. So, I think we will carry the cooking pot and some tools with us today. They’ll be most immediately useful, don’t you think?”

“Aye, and then come back for the rest when we build an island compoundSwiss Familystyle. We should use that as our reference guide.”

 He raises an eyebrow.

“You never read that book as a bairn?”

 “I was more of a movies kid…”

“Fair enough. Daisy will know all about it though….”

 “Daisy?”

Oh yeah—I’ve got to watch my mouth.

Feck. It should have been Brooke in the middle of this mess, not poor Daisy. Brooke would have been able to conquer this situation, but Daisy? I’m so worried for her.

“Killian, take this.” Gray hands me a sharp metal stake. “Use it as a hiking pole, then at the beach we can use it to spear fish.”

 Right on.

Harvey returns with all our bottles full of water once more, thanks to Rex’s spring. Rex tells us to stuff lychee and bananas in our pockets.

Gray looks down at the fruit bulging out of my shorts, then looks up at me.

“Looks like I’m pleased to see you,” I tell him.

His face remains impassive at first, but then the corner of his mouth lifts a fraction.

Oh, Gray, you goof. I kinda really like you.

 DAISY

For the rest of the dark night I stay awake and alert. Twice, I have to physically encourage Leander to keep breathing. As the sky eventually lightens again, I take stock of the situation.

It isn’t good. Keyara is barely responding to me, possibly in shock, and Leander is unconscious. We are out of water, my head is pounding, and I can’t imagine how bad little Keyara feels. And then there is dehydrated Leander. It’s not good at all.

I’ll have to go to the pool and get water.

I tell Key what I’m doing. Then, ignoring my tired, aching body, I go fill all our water containers, then I stop and collect some lychee. Opening coconuts takes more strength than I have .
