Feck—Is Gray alright?

Rex is climbing back down to check on him.

“It wasn’t my fault,” Harvey snaps. “You were all crowding me. I didn’t need help, I was fine.”

He isn’t even asking if Gray is alright, and that makes me want to smash his face in.

Is Gray alright? He has to be.

“Rex?” I shout down to him. “What’s going on?”

“Gimme a minute,” he shouts back.

It’s a long minute. I watch Harvey lay back and close his eyes, the little shite.

“KILLIAN?”

I lean over the ledge and see Rex raise a hand with the thumb up. Thank feck for that. The weight lifts off my chest.

“KILLIAN!” Rex yells again.

“YEAH?”

“Can you climb down?”

I swing my legs over the edge. Harvey notices. “What are you doing? You can’t leave me here on my own.”

“Back in a few, just take a breather,” I tell him. No point winding him up. Before I start climbing, I note storm clouds amassing on the horizon. If they are headed this way, we need to get off this exposed peak.

Descending, I take a moment to acknowledge that I nearly fecking lost it at the idea of Gray being hurt. I don’t know what that means, but it meanssomething.

On the ground, I instantly crouch down next to him. “You OK? Hurt?”

His face doesn’t show much emotion, but he’s clutching his arm. “Just a little beat up.”

“He got tired. Decided on a siesta, ain’t that right, Gray?” Rex pokes him.

“Fuck off, Rex.”

“Aww, need me to get you a pillow?”

I ignore their back and forth and move my hand to his shirt. “Can I see?”

Gray leans forward. “It’s where I got bitten last night. My shoulder. Rock smashed into it. That’s why I fell.”

I lift the material and see the area is red and swollen. It’s hard to know whether it’s from the bite or the fall. Gray winces as I put the shirt back down.

“Can you still climb?” Rex asks.

“Probably not,” Gray groans.

I put out a hand to stroke his hair, then quickly retract it.

Oops.

Rex sits back on his haunches, looking thoughtful. After a moment, he turns to me. “I need you to stay with Gray. You can find a way around the peak, right? Circle through the jungle, then head to the north point. You can meet us there. I’ll continue on with Harvey. We should be able to reach—” he pauses, thinking, “—the northern shore in another hour or two.”

“I hate to say this, but it looks like there’s a storm coming. Out on the horizon is a massive bank of dark clouds,” I tell Rex and Gray. Neither of them look happy about my report.
