I snap out of it.
Daisy is looking at me with concern. “You OK? You spaced out.”
“Yeah, I'm good. Pretty beat, though.” The sun is halfway down the sky now, so I’m guessing it is mid afternoon. “It will be dark by six, so anything we need to do in the daylight, we should get on with.”
“I agree. We need to collect more firewood, so we can have it going all night,” says Daisy, “and also, we should open more coconuts.”
“Sure.”
We’ll need more calories than what just coconut can give us, but it’s enough for now. After some time collecting fallen branches and driftwood, we head back and collapse next to the fire.
Daisy lies down in the sand, putting her arms around Keyara. I send Rex a mental message that I’ve got Key, and I will keep her safe, come what may.
Seriously, brother. I’ve got her.
Fuck, I know how much he’ll be freaking. Hopefully Gray is with him. They’ll have gotten on the raft with Harvey and Killian.
You look after each other, and I’ll keep Key and Daisy safe until you get here—deal?
I don’t hear any voices in my head giving me a reply, but I feel better for just putting it out there. I’m desperate to flop down next to the girls, but force myself back to the water hole first to fill up a couple of coconut shells with water for them. By the time I get to lie down again, I’m tapped out. Daisy is hugging Key, so I pull her body close to mine, and we lay like measuring cups.
“Sweet dreams, Daisy. We’ll get to grips with this properly tomorrow.”
Daisy smells of salt and sweat, but her hair still has traces of something floral. Shampoo?
I could do a big bubble bath right about now, but I’ve a feeling it’s going to be a few days until that happens.
But Rex has the raft. The beacon will be beeping. Rex and co. will get rescued, then they’ll come find us.
I give it a week, tops.
GRAY
When we get to the spring, I let Harvey go first because whatever. He takes his sweet time, but finally I get to drink and wash my face.
“I want to rinse my shirt when you’re done,” Harvey says.
Groaning, I get to my feet and we swap places. His idea is a good one; my shirt is stiff with salt. I take it off, and as I do so, something crinkles in the pocket.
Huh?
I release the button snap.
“Yes!” Past-me has tucked a protein bar in there. Obviously it’s not going to satisfy us very much when it’s divided by four, but it’s definitely better than nothing.
“What are you smiling about,” asks Harvey as he wrings out his shirt.
“Found this in my pocket.”
Harvey’s eyes narrow. “I’ll give you a hundred bucks for it...five hundred.”
That makes me laugh, then I realize he is not joking. “Fuck off. We’ll split it evenly.” I take the bar and set it carefully on a boulder, away from the marshy water. Harvey looks mutinous but says nothing more.
What a fucking dick.
I take my turn rinsing my shirt, and as I do, I hear something. A crinkle.
The fuck? I stand and turn just in time to see Harvey chew and swallow the entire bar.
