Oh right. Pull yourself together.

“I’m sure it’s not broken,” I say. I can’t form any further words. His fingers are sliding beyond my knee and slowly up the inside of my thigh. I think, no, I know the crotch of my pj’s just became a little damp.

Asa is smiling at me, “Why don’t you let me take care of you?”

Take care of what exactly?

I am doing my best not to pant. I should pull my leg away, but I just don’t want to. Is he aware of what he is doing to me?

Maybe, because his hand stops. Asa gently lowers my foot to the ground.

“Get dressed, Harmony, I’m taking you to urgent care.”

In a daze, I just nod.

What the heck is wrong with me? My body never does this.

I’ve had one boyfriend in my life, and that was two years ago. He never elicited reactions like this from me.

I turn my mind away from my libido and onto the problem of getting dressed. My clothes are all upstairs, and I’m still wearing Hugo’s tee shirt and a pair of booty shorts.

Standing to hobble up the stairs, Asa moves behind me.

“Carry you up?”

Much as my currently out of control, sex-starved mind, would love Asa to carry me off to a bedroom, I look at him and then the narrow staircase. “Do you honestly think you would fit?”

“You have a point,” he grumbles.

Sitting on my butt, I go up the steps one at a time and then balance in the bedroom on one foot.

I’m soon throwing a yellow sundress over my head, and putting on one flip-flop. Then, unusually for me these days, I add some mascara and a squirt of scent. After making my way carefully down the stairs again, Asa carries me outside. Beyond him is a pale-blue Bronco. Both the shell top and doors have been taken off. A rock star and a styling ride.

For someone who doesn’t want to draw attention to herself, this is a really bad combo.

“Maybe I don’t need to go,” I say.

Asa narrows his eyes.

“Humor me,” he says. “I want to make sure you haven’t torn a ligament or something. Come on. At the very least, we can get it properly wrapped. We’ll do that, and then get lunch. Sounds good?”

Sounds good?

I just don’t know. My brain doesn’t seem to be operating at 100%. Also, it’s complicated when it comes to things like doctors.

There was so much of life I’d missed out on; like dental visits, vaccinations, and childhood checkups. Everyone was too high or too oblivious to get those basics organized for me. Luckily my new job has some coverage, and that makes me feel better about the trip.

“No need for lunch, but I guess you can give me a ride to urgent care.”

I get in the Bronco and let the rock star drive me to urgent care.

To my surprise, I find I am smiling for the whole ride into town. Even though I’ve had nearly four years with Patsy and Sheila, being looked after still feels like a novelty. It’s almost intoxicating.

In the parking lot Asa pulls a ball cap and a pair of shades out from the glove compartment. “Like my famous-person-disguise-kit?” he asks as he puts them on.

The dark glasses and hat just make him look more intriguing, not less.

Waiting to be seen by the x-ray technician, we flip through magazines. One has a whole spread about Mercury Rising.
