“I understand, but only one person can visit at a time.”

Hugo taking the role of Harmony’s boyfriend, and icing us out, is getting on my last nerve.

I stand. “I’ll come with you now, then I can swap with Hugo.”

Following the nurse out the door and down a corridor, I don't care about my brother's feelings—I just want to see my girl.

Finally we get to her room. Hugo nods and comes out, so the nurse allows me in.

Harmony is wearing a hideous pale gray hospital gown, her face is almost the same color. Her eyes are closed.

She is sleeping, so I don’t want to disturb her. Instead I spend some time just staring at my love. She really does have the most kissable lips in the world.

Those lips part slightly.

“Lennox?” she croaks, as she opens her eyes.

Fuck all these tubes and wires, I try and thread myself through them to get nearer to her body.

“Oh baby, you poor thing. Fuck, we thought we’d lost you.” I pick up her hand, being gently of the needle stuck into it, and kiss it gently.

“Sorry,” she mumbles. “The doctor said I had an overdose, I don't understand.”

“Don’t worry about that, baby. Just concentrate on getting better. Fuck, fuck. I love you so much, baby.”

“I love you too,” she mumbles, then drifts off to sleep again.

HARMONY

Police are standing at the end of my bed, and telling me things that don’t make sense.

“The security team went through the video feed. They found no footage of anyone sticking fentanyl patches to your back.”

That may be, but this is Screech’s handiwork. We all know it. At least me and the guys do. The police have a different idea.

“We are not going to charge you with possession at this time.”

“Possession?”

“It was her half-brother,” Hugo growls. “He got someone to stick those things on her.”

“There is no evidence that Ms. Towers' brother was even at the event, let alone be responsible for the incident,” the officer says.

It is too much. I lay back down and put the thin hospital pillow over my face.

Though muffled, I listen to my men giving the police all the reasons that this is not an overdose, but actually an attempted murder. I just want to get out of here and go back to the safety of Gold Creek Ranch.

???

After twenty-four hours of observation, I am discharged.

The four of us go straight to the airport, then on to the ranch. The guys are even more rattled than I am. The police are not listening to any of us. Hugo has employed yet more security.

The press all having a field day.

On our first full day back in Oregon, I spend an hour on the phone with Sheila, reassuring her that I am fine and being looked after. Then I send an email to the data collecting website and officially give my notice.
