“Yes, you can.” I reassured her.

“Damn it, Jaxon. I’m sorry, but I’m not strong enough.

I hated hearing the defeat in her voice. “Grab the rope.”

“I told you I can’t do it,” she grumbled.

“Grab the damn rope, Lily. I’ll pull you up.” She would do as I asked.

“No freaking way can you do that,” she yelled up at me. “We’ll figure something else out.”

She doubted me?

“I’m not telling you again. Grab. The. Rope. Now,” I growled in my best “don’t fuck with me tone”.

I knew she understood when she quickly replied, “Okay. I have it.”

Lifting her up by the rope wasn’t going to be a problem. Making sure she was safe the whole time was what worried me.

I grabbed the rope and wrapped it around my fists for extra leverage. The first yank I heard her squeak of surprise. The second one I finally felt I was gaining headway when the rope jerked forward three times in rapid succession. The unexpected movement almost caught me off balance.

My heart leaped into my throat while I tightened my grip, afraid of Lily falling.

Chapter Nineteen

Lily

My mind warred at thethought of letting go and allowing Jaxon to pull me up without any assistance. What if I was too heavy? What would he think of me and my weight then?

I loved my body and hated how these little doubts were creeping in at the most inopportune time.

He grunted. “Do you want to stay down there all night? Stop moving.”

“I’m helping.” I wanted to tell him to shut up, but that would’ve been in poor taste since he was the one getting me out of here.

“No. You aren’t,”He grumbled, his annoyance apparent in his tone.
