He grunted in reply and slid an arm around me to assist. Despite the circumstances, being this close to him was torture on my senses. The hard planes of his body tight against mine, his scent, the stubble on his jaw brushing against my hair, made me shiver. I gritted my teeth to stop myself from curling my body around his, or more embarrassingly, placing light kisses along his neck.

Jaxon shivered against me.

I felt bad about him giving his coat up, but also knew he wouldn’t accept me returning it to him even if it staved off hypothermia.

Patches barked at us and then took off in the direction of the house.

“My phone is in my back pocket,” he grunted. “Can you get it?”

“If I do that, I have to let go of you.” I wasn’t sure how much I was helping, but didn’t want to let go to find out.

He gritted his teeth and stopped. “It’s fine.”

I dipped my fingers into his pocket, careful to not completely let go of him. I held my breath as my hand brushed his hard backside.

“Hold the phone up so I can unlock it. The moonlight should be enough to illuminate my face. I called Ms. Ketill last.” His voice panted as he talked. I hated seeing him in so much pain, especially when it was my fault.

I tapped the screen until I got to Angela’s number. “Hi, it’s Lily. We’re going to need your help when we get closer. Jaxon’s hurt.”

Angela’s sharp gasp filtered through the phone. “Oh, dear. Is he okay? Are you okay?”

“He’ll be okay. We think he sprained his ankle. I’m fine, too. Just some sore muscles.” I answered, trying to stop her from worrying too much.

“Tell her to wait in the yard. We don’t need them to get lost looking for us,” he said, his voice sharp with pain.

“I heard him. We’ll be waiting for you.” Angela reassured me.

I slipped the phone into the pocket of my pants. Once my hand was free again, I wrapped it back around Jaxon. “Let’s go slow.”

He sighed but didn’t protest.

Our fight faded from my mind as I thought about Jaxon rescuing me. He wanted the world to think he was such an asshole, but I knew that wasn’t who he really was. I hugged his body closer. Once more Jaxon was changing my opinion of him and proving his grump-hole persona was a lie.
