“I sure hope so. I’ve employed the guy for the last twenty years.”
I leaned over and whispered in her ear. “It’s his private plane.”
Her eyes grew wide. “Oh.”
“I’m excited to visit the place that has captured your heart.” Uncle Theo said with a wink. I was pretty sure he didn’t just mean Rhode Island. He’d probably already guessed with some of our previous texts how I was feeling about Harper.
“We're looking forward to having you here.” And I was. I wanted Harper and Uncle Theo to hit it off. They were two of my most favorite people.
“How’s the baby doing?” Uncle Theo had been excited to know about the baby.
“She’s great.” Harper enthused. “We’re already more than halfway there.”
Harper and I chatted with Uncle Theo for a few more minutes before we hung up. I was looking forward to him being here and meeting Harper’s family. And for me to have an opportunity to bounce ideas off of him. He was great with a long-term strategy. Maybe he could help me figure out how to convince Harper to give us a real chance.
CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO
Harper
Lincoln mumbled inhis sleep and rolled over. The bed shifted as he did, and his arm straightened to lay beside me. A frown marred his handsome face, and I wondered if he’d been reaching for me in his sleep. I gently brushed aside the hair that had fallen over his face. A tiny smile formed on his lips.
I’d been awake for the past hour, not able to fall back asleep after needing to pee for the second time. Our conversation in the car swirled around in my head. Was it only three weeks ago that I’d told Lincoln I was pregnant? I’d never expected him to be all in on raising our child, especially after his initial reaction.
Now that he’d come to terms with becoming a father, it was even harder not to fall in love with him. My stomach clenched. If his job didn’t place him in the public eye, I’d agree to be with him in a heartbeat.
There were times I wondered if the universe was playing a terrible joke on me. The one thing in this world that terrified me was being in the media. And there was no doubt in my mind that people would wonder how I caught his attention. Knowing I was pregnant, they would assume I’d trapped him. It didn’t matter what the truth was, as long as it sold magazines or got one more click.
I shoved the blankets off of my overheated body—another joy of pregnancy. I knew I wasn’t going back to sleep anytime soon and decided to get up and go downstairs. At least I wouldn’t wake Lincoln up.
As soon as I was downstairs, I didn’t know what to do with myself. It was 2:00 am, and no one I knew was up. I didn’t want to have anything to drink, knowing I’d be up the rest of the night having to pee, and I wasn’t particularly hungry.
I walked down the hall, thinking I’d pop on the computer and see if any orders came in for the picker side of the business. As I passed the guest room door, I decided instead to freshen up the space for Lincoln’s uncle. We’d planned to do it in the morning, but I figured the physical activity might make me sleepy.
With my arms loaded with sheets from the bathroom linen closet, I made my way into the room. It had been a while since I was in there. We’d gotten rid of the antiques a week ago, and Lincoln had since ordered a new bedroom set. I stripped the bed and had changed the sheets when a pile of boxes in the corner caught my eye.
If they weren’t too heavy, I’d shove them in the closet for now. The first box was light, and as I picked it up, the flap opened. My eyes widened as I took in what was inside—a tiny stuffed giraffe. Putting the box back down, I took a closer look. There were various pacifiers, bibs, and a diaper bag I’d had my eye on, an insanelyexpensivediaper bag.
