I discreetly flicked her the middle finger. Clearly not caring, she blew me a kiss before swiveling back around on her seat to face the bar.

Kade’s hand pressed firmly on my lower back again as we finally made our way to the bar.

“You two must be parched after those fireworks.” Ashlyn leaned across the bar and waved to get the bartender’s attention. “Get these two—” She looked at us, waiting for us to jump in.

“I’ll have a white sangria,” I answered. It was the first drink that came to mind. I liked them but typically ordered a Long Island iced tea or rum and coke when out. Right now, I wanted something I could suck down. “And a water too, please.”

The bartender nodded and shifted his gaze to Kade. “I’ll take a Cape Codder. Do you ladies want anything?” He pulled his wallet out of his back pocket and handed his credit card to the bartender.

While Stella and Ashlyn placed their orders, I kept stealing glances at Kade. The man made me melt. I wanted so much more than the kiss we’d shared.

We sat on the two stools available to the right of Stella. Kade’s knee brushed against mine in the small space. The slight pressure wasn’t enough, so I moved my leg closer to rest next to his. “So, what brought you to Rhode Island?”

“I wanted a place to get away to that wasn’t overly crowded.” His eyes took on a far-off quality. “My parents brought me on vacation here once when I was younger.” He paused.

“And you liked it?” It must have made quite an impression for him to return all these years later.

“It was the best vacation we’d ever had. I was probably about twelve, and Rhode Island never left my thoughts. I always wanted to come back.” A brief lull in the music made his words easy to hear.

I smiled at him. “That’s Rhode Island. Once you’re here, you never want to leave.” My curiosity about him grew. I needed to know more. “Do you have any siblings?”

He shook his head. “You?”

I snorted. “You met them. The girls from the beach ... they’re my sisters. All six of them: Heidy, Haven, Hadley, Hazel, Hannah, and Hope. I’m the youngest.”

“Wow.” His shocked expression was one I’d often seen when I mentioned the size of my family.

“My parents always wanted a big family.” I shrugged. “Where are you from?”

“I live in Los Angeles.” He leaned in close to talk over the music that had grown louder.

I practically yelled my response so he could hear me. “Ohh, cool. I’ve always wanted to visit. Do you ever run into celebrities or anyone famous?” I was never super up-to-date on who the hottest new celebrity was. I think my TV crush was popular five years ago, not that I could remember his name now.

His gaze narrowed. “A few.”

I giggled, grateful the band chosen that moment to take a break. “I’d ask if it was anyone I’d know, but if they weren’t popular in the early part of this decade, I probably wouldn’t have a clue. My sisters laugh that I’m too wrapped up in work to have any idea who’s hot and who’s not. Now, my sister Heidy, she knows Hollywood's “who’s who” for sure.”

He grinned and laid his arm across the back of my chair. The move brought me close enough to him that if I wanted to, I could kiss his shoulder. And damn did I want to. I wanted to kiss and lick every part of his body. “What do you do for work?”

His fingers toyed with strands of my hair and lightly grazed my spine. Warmth spread through me. How could my body feel so alive and so relaxed at the same time? “I work in the entertainment industry.”

My face scrunched up. Kade’s touch was distracting. “Doing what?” I finally asked.

“Nothing much. I’ve worked on various movies.” He quickly changed the subject before I could ask more questions. “Have you always lived here?”

He continued his caresses, and no part of me wanted him to stop. “In Rhode Island? Yes.” It was hard to stay focused on the words coming out of his mouth.

I looked down for a minute.

I swayed with the onslaught of sensations running through me. I put my hand on his thigh to steady myself. It hadn’t been my intended target, but now that it was there, I didn’t want to let go. My thumb rubbed against the soft denim of his jeans.

Pulling my gaze up, I stared into his eyes, watching as his pupils dilated. Kade had gone quiet, studying me as intently as I was him. It was like every desire we felt for each other was communicated in this moment.

I jumped when a harsh breath left his mouth.

My hand clenched, tightening against the corded muscles of his thigh. What I wouldn’t give to see him naked.

He leaned in further. His lips grazed mine before he sat back. “You’re driving me crazy.”
