She raised her eyebrows. “Don’t play dumb with me.”
I swiped up to get out of the notes section and opened my text messaging app, vaguely remembering my phone pinging on the drive home. There had to be at least ten messages from Elaine, each one angrier than the last.
Elaine: We need to talk.
Elaine: Where are you?
Elaine: I’m done with the games.
Elaine: You’ve had your chance.
Elaine: I’m at your place. You’d better be on your way.
Elaine: Where the hell are you, Ashlyn?
Elaine: I’m already pissed at you for wasting my time. Get the fuck home.
I stopped reading. “What do you want?”
“What do I want? I’ve been pretty damn clear from the start. I’m disappointed you even have to ask.”
“Why are you here then?”
She stomped over to me and leaned in so close I jerked my head back. “I figured it was obvious. Time’s up. Your fairytale is over.”
My eardrums beat in time with my heart. The sound was deafening.Had she learned about my deal with Dean?“What do you mean?” I whispered.
“I’m done waiting for you to do what you should have done weeks ago. I should have known you didn’t have the guts to do it.”
I bit my lip. “Elaine—”
“Enough. I don’t have time for your excuses.”
My mouth snapped shut. What had she done?
“I’ve solved the situation without your help. It’s amazing what the right incentive will do to convince someone to help me.”
“Who helped you?”
“Does it really matter now? I have the designs you were too weak to get. I guess a pretty face means more than your business dreams. It’s pathetic,” she sneered.
I flinched.
“Do youactuallybelieve he’s in love with you?”
A lump formed in my throat and I couldn’t force words around it.
“He’s just using you. I bet you slept with him the first night.”
My face flushed. She had no idea how true her statement was.
“Why else would he want you? You were an easy lay.”
“He’s not like that,” I said, finally angry enough to find words.
“I bet he is. He’s just like your father. Men like that only use women.”
I sucked in a breath. How dare she? I wanted to drive my fist through her face. Neither my father nor Dean used women. Not like she meant.
