She was sheltered, safe.

He’d kissed her completely punch drunk by the time he began working the buttons of her shirt free. Suddenly not able to get naked fast enough, their hands worked in a flurry, popping buttons, pulling zippers, pulling at hems. Desi ripped her shirt off and threw it on the floor, followed by her jeans. She tugged his shirt over his head, so desperate to see his beautiful chest on full display. But he was looking at her with awe and lust. Glancing down at herself, she grinned when she realized she was wearing the bra and panties the deer had pulled off her line.

“As much as I love them, I want them gone,” he said huskily.

He didn’t have to say it twice. She released the front snap of the bra, took a breath, and let the cups fall apart. The straps slid down her arms where she flung it free.

“Fuck, Kora.”

He cupped her breasts in his hands and rubbed his thumbs lightly over her nipples. She lay back against the pillows and soaked up the sensations he caused, each touch feeling better than before. Dipping his head, he took a nipple between his lips. She gasped, her fingers digging into his hair to hold him closer.

Desi worshipped her with kisses, his mouth moving trails over her sensitive body. Hooking his thumbs in the sides of her panties, he dragged them down her hips to her ankles. She realized then that she was shaking. Being with him like this was overwhelming in the best possible way. Her mind hadn’t been this clear in so long and she never wanted it to end. Glancing up at her, he caught her eyes as he moved between her legs and gently nudged her thighs apart. Half his body hung off her mattress as he positioned himself. A blip of nervousness robbed her good mood, but she quickly dismissed it.

Whatever he wanted to do to her is what she wanted too. Being with him felt so right. So natural.

She moved into position for him, her eyes locked with his as he dipped low. The first touch had her reeling, each second pushing her into a realm of pleasure she’d never felt before. It had never been like this with anyone. Just Desi.

Just Desi.

His name fell from her mouth like worship. He drove her to pure ecstasy, and suddenly she was alive with it. Colors burst behind her eyes, every inch of her consumed. She couldn’t hold still. Her hands dug into the covers, her body shaking with the most explosive orgasm she’d ever had.

He moved back up her body, kissing her breasts and the sensitive sides of her neck. Touching him, she explored his chest, marveling at the pure muscle covered by supple skin and soft hair. She needed more, wanted to explore all of him but he still had his pants on.

The button was undone, the zipper down. Grabbing at the waist, she gasped as her hand bumped into his erection. Long, thick, and so hot. Desi suddenly pulled back as she reached for him.

“Not today, love.”

Frowning, she was sure she’d heard him wrong. “What? Why?”

It was clear that pulling away was painful. He stood and fastened his jeans with some effort. She propped up on her elbows, the pleasure slow to fade. “Desi, what’s going on?”

“I want you so badly. You have no idea, Kora. But when I take you completely, it’s because you want me in the same way that I want you. As mine. My mate. I know you’re not ready for that yet.”

She wanted to say something, but nothing seemed right. He sat down next to her. Her skin began to cool so she held a throw blanket to her chest and sat beside him. Running a finger over the defined muscles in his back, she leaned in and kissed the scar on the back of his shoulder.

“I don’t want to be afraid anymore.”

He took her chin and kissed her. “You’ll get there.”

“Idowant you.”

She couldn’t keep the hesitation from her tone because he was right, she wasn’t there yet.

He stood and put on his shirt. “It’s getting late. I’ll let you get to bed.”

Her body screamed for him to stay, to curl up next to her like he had in her daydream so they could wake up together, content and happy.

If he stayed, maybe she’d feel this free tomorrow too. Maybe the fear would be gone, the weight and the constant worry, gone. She moved to get up, but he stopped her with a gentle hand on her shoulder.

“Don’t get up. I know my way out and I’ll set the alarm. Rest. Get some sleep and I’ll see you tomorrow?”

“I’ll be at the bookstore all day.”

His phone suddenly alarmed with a harsh, intrusive tone. Frowning, he quickly pulled it from his back pocket and watched the screen.

A low growl bubbled from his throat.

Kora sat straighter. “What’s wrong?”
