Lilly sprinted to our door again, giving me an impatient look, so I kissed his cheek and headed out.
Hours later, after more than a few hundred dollars were spent, Lilly and I sat at a tiny table in the mall’s food court sipping boba tea. She’d asked to try it and I’d been curious about it for a while. Turns out, it’s freaking yummy.
“Are you excited about your new outfits?” I asked. We talked about the style she liked and I helped her find at least five new outfits in varying shades of primary colors. She said she was going for that aesthetic and talked all about what she meant by that while I listened and absorbed. She even snagged some new yellow Converse and some accessories.
“Obsessed is an understatement,” she said, her voice full of joy. “Thanks so much for today.”
“It’s been fun. I love hanging out with you.” My cheeks lifted in a grin as I realized I’d genuinely meant that. Lilly was an amazing kid.
“My mom and I never did stuff like this. She was always busy with Jeff or her boyfriends before him.” Her tone grew somber. “Are you and my dad going to stay together forever?”
I gulped down the sip of tea that had been in my mouth before I choked. “Umm, well,” I said, while she stared at me with her big eyes, identical to her father’s. “Forever is a long time. But I can promise you this. I like your dad a lot and we care about each other. And you’re so special to me.” I held her hand and she grinned. “I’m here for you, always.”
“I love you, Olivia.” She sipped her tea and looked around at people passing by like she didn’t just touch my freaking soul. “Can I get my ears pierced?”
I choked down the swell of emotion in my throat and squeezed her hand. “I love you too, sweetie. And sure, but let’s text your dad first. I doubt he’ll mind.”
“Yes!” she said.
After Wes gave us the thumbs up, we finished our shopping spree with ear piercing and a trip to Sephora for some face wash for Lilly and a new lip shade for me. My heart overflowed already and I still had a date night with Wes ahead of me.
Chapter 33
Wes
We pulled up toSunshine and Olivia turned to me with a raised brow. “Do you need to get something from your office?”
“Not exactly. Come on, you’ll see.” I got out of the car and walked around to open her door. She looked fucking stunning in a formfitting dress that hit mid-thigh, heels, and her hair tied back in a low ponytail.
I was more than a little nervous that she wouldn’t like what Alex and I set up this afternoon. But I wanted her all to myself tonight and this made the most sense to me.
I unlocked the door and stood in front of her. “Okay, close your eyes.” A shaky laugh left her lips. “I’ve got your hands.”
“What’s going on?” she asked as she closed her eyes and followed my lead.
“Just a little something Alex and I came up with,” I said, walking her toward my office.
“Alex helped? That’s so sweet.”
“He did. You’ve raised quite the gentleman. I could take a few lessons from him.” She smiled wide and I took a mental picture of this moment. “Almost there. Okay, stop here and don’t open your eyes yet.”
She rolled her red bottom lip between her teeth and let out a nervous laugh again while I lit the candles I arranged earlier throughout the restaurant. Caleb and Thea helped me set up a private dining space in my office, moving my desk into the corner and lugging a spare table and chairs in here. I had Caleb coming to cook for us any minute now. I paid him a few hundred bucks to make it amazing and to leave as soon as he finished cleaning up. Hopefully, he wouldn’t flake out on me. The last thing I did was turn on the playlist I made on my phone, which it pained me to admit I’d been using daily.
“Okay, you can open.”
She took in the space and grinned. “Oh my God, I didn’t even realize this was your office at first. It looks great in here.”
“Thank you. I had some help.” I pulled out her chair. “Come have a seat. We have the place to ourselves. Well, except Caleb, who’s coming to cook any minute now.”
“I love this. It’s perfect. There’s not a pile of paperwork in sight.”
I heard a sound from the back door, which had to be Caleb. “One second, I’ll go grab drinks. What are you in the mood for?”
“Whatever you’re having,” she said.
I went into the kitchen to pull out the wine I had chilled at the same time that Caleb came in. “Hey, Boss. Your lady liking the surprise?” He grabbed a chef coat from a hook on the wall and slipped it on.
“So far,” I said, uncorking the bottle. “You know what you’re making?”
