I took one last look at Savannah’s childhood home as I drove away, happy I’d never have to go back there again.

“Are we going home?” Lilly asked.

A contented glow spread through me as I smiled at my two girls. I took Olivia’s hand and brought it to my lips, brushing a soft kiss along her skin. “Yes, we’re going home.”

Three Months Later

“Is Savannah meeting ushere?” I grabbed the water bottles while shoving granola bars into the kid’s hands.

“Yeah, I gave her the address yesterday.” Wes came to my side of the car and pulled me in for a hug. “What else do we need?”

“Nothing. I think I grabbed it all,” I answered. “Alex, don’t forget your gloves.”

“Got them,” he yelled as he started toward the gym doors.

“You mean I got them. You almost left them in the back seat,” Lilly added, sounding too grown up. I laughed as they bickered back and forth like true siblings.

“Come on, no fighting. Save it for class,” Wes teased.

“Dad, it’s not an actual class. It’s a test.”

“I know, and you’re going to kick butt. Both of you are.” I smiled at Wes as we followed the kids into the gym.

The waiting area was packed with families. I loved how Mark and Dina invited parents to watch as their kids reached this incredible milestone. Seeing their loved ones there for them, cheering them on, was incredibly special.

Wes stepped outside to wait for Savannah. She was back from Europe for a few weeks now and getting used to our new custody arrangement. We weren’t buddies with her or anything, but since everything happened with her mother we’d formed a sense of solidarity. It seemed to me like she wanted to be a good mom, even if her follow through wasn’t always the best.

Mia popped out from the office, her baby bump leading the way. She hugged the kids first before pulling me in for a signature sister hug. “I’m so proud of them!”

“Me, too. They’ve come so far,” I said. “How are you feeling? I swear you’re showing more and more each time I see you.”

She rubbed her bump. “Tired and hungry. This little one is like a tapeworm. I can’t eat enough.”

I laughed, remembering the feeling. “And Shawn? How’s my favorite brother-in-law doing?”

She rolled her eyes but grinned. “Moody and overprotective to the max but you know me, I love that about him.” Her cheeks tinged pink and she hugged her arms to her chest. “He’s going to be the best dad.”

“He really is. And Remy’s going to be the best dog brother.”

“I almost can’t wait for the next few months to pass but I know I should live in the moment,” she said. “My ovaries are actually going to explode when I see Shawn holding our baby girl.”

“I think ovaries around the globe are going to explode.” She giggled and turned her head as the man of the conversation stepped out of the gym and chatted with a group of parents. “Is he assisting?”

“Yeah, he was helping Coby set up in there.” I watched her beam at her new husband and I couldn’t help but feel an overwhelming surge of love for our family. “Oh, by the way, did mom tell you she was coming back next month?”

“Why so soon?” I asked. She was here last month for Mia and Shawn’s intimate backyard wedding.

“Who knows? Maybe she’s gone soft since the divorce? She has seemed much nicer than usual lately.” Mia shrugged and chewed her lip. “I’m just glad Dad’s staying away. She was telling me yesterday that there’s rumors he’s dating someone.”

“I believe it,” I said. “What about Mom? Has she reconnected with Senator Gillis?”

Mia laughed. “You think she’d tell me about her love life? She hasn’t even admitted the affair to me out loud.”

“True. She hasn’t to me either. I’m okay with not knowing.”
