“Thank you for the opportunity. It sounds silly but this club means a lot to me. It’s my dream—ironic, considering the name of the place—to own my own club one day so I’m looking forward to learning all I can.”

I knew if Emerald were here, she’d be beaming ear to ear.

“By the way, Mr. Connor?” she asked.

 “Yes?”

“Tell your assistant I said thanks. And I hope I’m not overstepping in saying she’s a real keeper. I could see the chemistry between you two. There will always be an open room at the club for you both, if the need ever arises.” Her smile was audible.

“I—uh.” I swallowed. She didn’t need to learn my personal life, but dammit I’d needed to talk to someone other than Aiden. “I may have fucked up my chances with her. It’s a long story.”

“Hmm. Well, like I told her, I watch people fuck for a living. I can tell when the chemistry is real. It’s a palpable force that nothing—not even a misunderstanding—can keep away. Good luck, Connor.”

I chuckled at her candor. “Thanks, Eliza. We’ll be in touch.”

Was this only a misunderstanding? If I wanted to try to get her back I’d have to make some changes. I dialed Ralph, hoping I could catch him before he left. He answered right away.

“Can you come back up to my office? I have something I need to run by you.”

While I waited for him to make the trek back up, I called Gary Woods, hoping to catch him before he left for the night. Eliza had lit a fire under my ass and I was done not going after what I wanted.

“Gary Woods, manager extraordinaire,” he said, full of more energy than a sugared up toddler.

“Woods, it’s Logan Connor.” He jumped right into chitchat, but I cut him off. Rude or not, I had a reason for calling. “I’m sorry it took me so long to call you personally. I had to leave early to take care of some things, but I wanted to see if Ms. Handler was doing okay? I know she mentioned a meeting with her advisor in a few days. What’s the update on that?

Gary was uncharacteristically quiet for a moment, I could hear him messing with something in the background.

 “Woods? What’s going on?”

“It wasn’t my idea. I was willing to forget all about theincident. But Emmy had her mind made up. She quit the other day. Told me not to worry about the meeting, she’d take care of it.”

Dammit. That meeting was everything to her. It was the way into the coveted internship she’d wanted and she’d needed Gary to sign off so she could gain her credits. I ground my teeth so hard I wouldn’t be surprised if I’d chipped a tooth.

“Gary, this is important. Do you still have all the details for the meeting?”

He clacked away on his keyboard. “Yuppers. I have it right here. It’s tomorrow at nine AM. Did you need anything else? I live to serve you, Sir Connor.”

People needed to stop with the sir.I only wanted to hear it come out of one beautiful mouth.

“Can you forward me that information please? And in case you do speak with Ms. Handler, please don’t mention that we spoke.”

“You got it, Bossman. Give me a call next time you’re in town. I was thinking… you, me, wings at Hooters, tickets to a play at Greyridge community theater—it’s just as good as Broadway—then maybe some drinks, slices of pie. You know, a casual hang, us guys.”

There wasn’t enough time left in the day to mentally unpack all of that.

“Uh—sounds fun. Thanks, Woods. And happy New Year.” I hit the end button right as Ralph knocked.

Everything in me wanted to call Emerald and beg her for forgiveness. If I knew her as well as I thought I did, she wouldn’t answer.

 No.

I had to make a plan to get her back and that started with getting out of my own damn way.

 Chapter 15

 Emmy

Ihadnoreasonto be dressed in my job interview suit, hair curled with my head held high. This meeting would only cause me more grief, but I refused to cancel. I’d at least try to plead for my credit and speak on what working for Resorts Worldwide would mean to me.
