“Right,” she emphasized the T, but stopped to look directly at me. “You’re telling me that the whole time you were gone, three whole weeks, you didn’t hook up with a single person?”
Fuck. She had me there. Thoughts of that redhead in the bar bathroom popped into my head. Scoffing, she added, “That’s what I thought.”
My poker face sucked. “Baby, I didn’t sleep with anyone. I only wanted you. Onlywantyou. I was an idiot. I should have called you…explained everything.”
“Keep your voice down,” she said through gritted teeth. “Come here.” She grabbed onto my arm, led me around a corner, and pushed me against the wall. Damn my cock was hard. She could push me around anytime. “New rule. No bringing up the past.” Rising on her tiptoes to get as close to my face as she could she added, “This thing between us, this game, it’ll be over soon. So why bother rehashing things. The past is the past and the damage is done. Whatever you did,” I threw up my hands to break in, but she cut me off, “Or didn’t do, is frankly none of my business. I still don’t know what’s in this for you, nor do I care. After this weekend, we are done, Coby.”
I watched her back away, one step, then another, before she stormed down the hallway leaving me standing there feeling like the biggest piece of shit that ever walked the earth.
Chapter 19
Kendahl
Howfittingthattheweather mirrored my mood. I watched the rain pound against the lobby window. Maybe I had been too harsh with Coby.No. He hesitated when I asked him if he hooked up with anyone while he was away allegedly “helping” a friend. I did not need another cheater in my life. Technically we had been on a break, but if he’d missed me that much, he could have kept it in his pants.
He showed up after a few minutes and joined me on the couch. I was expecting a remark or joke to break the icy tension between us, but he was uncharacteristically silent. The only sound came from Coby scraping his hands against his beard.
The chilly room had me scootching closer to feel the heat of his body. This vacation was going to hell. It had been one disaster after another with shitty weather as the cherry on top. He must have taken me moving closer as his queue to chat.
“If this kid doesn’t get here soon, I say we bail.” He sounded as tired as I felt.
I checked my phone. Aiden was five minutes late. “Let’s give him five more minutes. Only because he’s Jill’s nephew,” I said.
Coby chuckled but didn’t respond.
I turned to him. “What are you laughing at?”
He stared into my eyes, a look that felt too intimate to be given in a lobby with random senior citizens walking around searching for the coffee maker. “You. The way you use your business voice sometimes.”
“Can you be more condescending?” I scoffed.
He put his hands up in surrender. “Sorry, okay. It’s cute.” He leaned in so only I could hear what he said next. “It makes my dick hard.”
My face heated from a mix of anger and other emotions that I would be ignoring. Stupid hormones. “I hope you like having blue balls because that thing isn’t coming near me.”
He chuckled again, an infuriating husky sound that sent heat straight to my belly. Jill’s nephew better be on his way. I needed to get some space from this man.
As if summoned directly by my thoughts, Aiden Aarons and his partner came traipsing into the lobby carrying to-go coffee cups looking completely unbothered. I forced a breath into my chest so I wouldn’t lose it on them.Remember Kendahl, it’s Coby you’re pissed at. Keep it together.
“Hey, my bros.” He raised his hand in a gesture that wasn’t quite a wave, but I guess could be considered one. “Sorry we’re late.”Yeah, you look so sorry,I stewed.
“It’s all good, man. Let’s get started,” Coby cut in sounding stern and boss like. Interesting, he had a business voice too. I’d have to tease him about it later.
No. That was flirty behavior.
“Okay, no worries. Zara and I need a minute to set up and then we’re good to go.” They pulled some items out of a suitcase. The equipment looked professional for a pair of young kids, a mic, camera, and lighting set up. My stomach churned. I had never been the subject of an interview. It was always me setting things like this up for my clients. Who would have thought I’d be feeling this nervous. Coby glanced at me, scrunching his brows, and before I could protest, he slung his arm around my shoulders. The warmth and weight of him had me sighing in relief.
“Okay, lovebirds, act natural and say whatever comes to mind.” He gestured to his partner to start recording.
“Helloooo, everyone, and welcome back to my channel. I’m Aiden Aarons, as you already know.” He smirked at the camera while his voice boomed loud enough to shatter glass. “I have a special treat for you all. The internet exploded last night when their onstage singing battle ended with a vomit-induced grand finale.” I cringed internally but tried not to show it. “It’s the Karaoke Couple here for an exclusive interview. Kendahl, Coby, welcome to my show.”
Zara turned the small camera in our direction. My tongue suddenly felt like it weighed ten pounds. “Thanks for having us,” Coby said as he gave my shoulders a reassuring squeeze.
“Let’s get right into it. The burning question on everyone’s mind is are you two dating?”
Coby looked at me, urging me to answer with his eyes. I cleared my throat. “Uh, yes. We are together.” I sounded robotic.
Unfazed, Aiden continued, “Wonderful. I think we were hoping for that answer. Can you tell us a little bit about how you ended up battling it out karaoke style.”
