Her phone chirped to life and kept chirping. It beeped for what felt like a full five minutes.Kendahl stared at the small rectangle, her messy blonde hair flopped forward in the bun atop her head. I waited for her to speak and scooted closer so I could try and peek at the screen.

Come to think of it, I hadn’t checked my own device since the previous night when I silenced it, apart from looking at the time. I had been worried about someone from work or even another check in call from Mia and Shawn waking her up early in the morning. Those two meddled more than a pair of new mothers. I hoped my phone wouldn’t be blowing up the same way.

“Is everything okay?” I asked.

Her answering voice was shrill as she spoke through closed teeth. “No. Everything is not okay. Every person I’ve ever known plus God knows how many random strangers are blowing up my socials. My boss texted me multiple times, and…” She scrolled and her eyes widened. “Oh my God.”

My heart rate hitched up a notch and I jerked to hover behind her. “What?” I couldn’t get a read on the change in her tone. She almost sounded in awe.

She flopped backward and clutched her hands to her chest, then turned her head toward the foggy windows before meeting my gaze.“I got an email from my dream PR firm this morning. They want to schedule a Zoom interview with me.”

I wanted to hold her in my arms, praise her, and show her that she’s incredible. But I came back to reality and remembered she pretty much hated me.

“That’s great news. When do they want to have the interview?”

“Monday morning. I don’t know if I could do this. I mean, I sent my resume out on a whim. I was having a crappy day and figured, what the hell, I’ll move to LA. I never thought they’d get back to me. What would Mia say? Or my mom?” She groaned, then rolled onto her stomach and pushed her face into the plush pillow. “Plus,” she continued speaking but I couldn’t make out what she said with her face attached to a pillow.

“What? Kendahl, look at me. I can’t help you if you’re talking into a pillow.” I flipped her around like she weighed next to nothing and waited for her to tell me again, but annoyingly, she tossed her arm over her face and groaned some more.

“Come on, if you don’t move your arm and talk to me, you’re going to force me into extreme measures,” I said.

I knew how to get to her. She slid her arm to the side, and her wide blue eyes peeked out from behind her palm. “Extreme measures?”

I kneeled facing her, thinking wicked thoughts, and took in how perfect she was lying next to me. She had no fucking idea what I wanted to do to her or how much I wanted to taste every inch of her. I’d only ever gotten to taste her lips when we were dating, and she had been exquisite. How I kept it in my pants then, was beyond me. Then again, I never did have the opportunity I had now with us side by side in bed.

“I bet I could make you spill every single thought in your mind to me right now.” I trailed my fingers lightly from her hip down the outside of her thigh. Her breath hitched, and she ripped her arm away to look at me with blazing eyes. “Now, what did you say?” I trailed the same hand up and down the midline of her thigh. Her breaths became faster as she clenched her thighs together. “Should I keep going?”

“What if they see the video?” The words escaped her lips in a rush of breath, and I stopped, leaving my palm flat against her thigh.

“Good girl.” I gathered my thoughts. “I wouldn’t worry about it right now. If you want this job, we’ll figure everything out.” I let my eyes bore into hers, waiting for her response and watching her react to our closeness.

“They’ll ask questions… like everyone else.”

Her eyes were icy saucers as she evaded saying what I knew was on her mind. What if they asked about us?I had told that jackass YouTube guy we were together, but that was easily remedied if Kendahl didn’t agree.

Every one of her thoughts played out on her face as she chewed her lip. Finally, as she was about to open her mouth to speak, someone knocked on the door. She jumped, and I mean literally jumped from the bed like she was an Olympic pole vaulter.

“Do you think it’s that Aiden guy again?”

“You want me to get it?” I sat up at the edge of the bed, missing the heat of her body.

She hesitated against the wall but adjusted her hair and stomped forward. “No, I’ve got it.”

They knocked again. “Ken Dolly?” This time there was no guessing who was behind the door because Mia squealed loud enough for her voice to travel through multiple dimensions. “Time to get up, my little diva.”

Kendahl yanked the door open before Mia attracted any more attention in the hall. “Come in, come in,” she whispered.

Mia stepped into the room, took one look at me and my shirtlessness, snapped her head back to Kendahl who was still disheveled as hell and squealed again. The sound went through my skull, and I wasn’t even hungover. I couldn’t imagine how Kendahl must have felt.

“I knew it,” she singsonged. “Shawn said he couldn’t get ahold of you this morning,” she said pointing at me, “and I knew this was why.”

When I didn’t correct her assumption, Kendahl piped in. “It’s not what it looks like. It’s ju—“

“Everyone is going bananas about you two. Do you guys even know? You freaking killed it last night and, apparently, some famous YouTube guy got it all on video and well…” She stared at our faces and noticed our lack of shock. “I guess you know. Olivia sent me some TikToks this morning of you both. I’d bet the whole country has seen your karaoke show.” She winced while she took in Kendahl’s appearance. “And your unfortunate accident afterward. Luckily, it doesn’t seem like that’s the focus, at least this morning.”

Mia flopped on the bed next to me and shook her head while smiling.

“We know. That guy bombarded us this morning, and my phone is blowing up.” Kendahl groaned.
