“Good luck. Let’s hope this time around is a better experience.” I laughed to lighten the mood even though I wanted to curl up in a ball on my bed.

Shutting the door, I faced my empty apartment. It had felt like home for a few days with Coby there but now it was back to feeling devoid of life. Would he really move here? He made it clear that he was choosing me. Finally the man I loved was putting me above all else. I could hardly believe his words. I’d have to decide if LA was really it for me, before he uprooted his entire life.

Chapter 39

Kendahl

Crap!

My favorite button down decided to pop a button at the worst possible time. I needed to leave to meet my client at a photoshoot in ten minutes. Coby’s surprise trip the other day still had my mind reeling which made me more flustered than usual. I scrambled around my office for a safety pin so that I wasn’t relabeled all over TikTok as “wardrobe malfunction lady” instead of “puking karaoke lady.”

In the process of rummaging through my purse, three different people popped into my door to ask unimportant questions, and my phone went off a dozen times. Why did my shirt have to betray me this way?

Ah-ha! I stood up to my full height and spotted a cardigan I kept on a hook on the wall. They always kept this place like a walk-in freezer, so I made sure to leave an extra sweater here in case I needed it.I shrugged it on and buttoned it up to my collarbones. It wasn’t a perfect match with my olive green high-waisted pants, but it would do. No one would be looking at me at a Carina photoshoot anyway.

“Miss Edwards?” Victor’s assistant peeked into my doorway. “The driver is ready for you.”

I nodded and grabbed my purse.

The black Rolls Royce rolled up to my client’s luxury apartment building and the driver, Albert, waited outside to open the car door. Having a driver was still something I was getting used to. Victor insisted on us using the driver to pick up our high-profile clients for media functions.

My palms were clammy despite the air conditioning blasting through the vents. This would be my first time going to a photoshoot with my own client.

Zoey Tejada signed on with Stratestar a few day ago after one of her Instagram posts went viral. She became the most requested model in LA with every top designer vying to book her. She was gorgeous, of course, with glowing tan skin, big green eyes, and curves that I certainly didn’t have when I was only seventeen.

We’d only chatted on the phone, so seeing her in person, as she left her apartment, had me a bit speechless. She had an aura about her, something you couldn’t put a finger on, but I could see why she was so sought after.

She hugged me as soon as she got in the car, and we chatted like old friends. She was nervous about her first real shoot too. By the time we reached the studio, which looked like a large warehouse from the outside, both of our nerves had calmed.

“I’m here to support you in any way you need,” I reminded her. “Your agent may also stop by, so let us know if you need a break.”

“I will,” she said beaming. Her whole demeanor changed as we pulled up. She radiated confidence, and I channeled some of her energy as we walked inside.

We were immediately greeted by the stylist and her assistant who pulled Zoey away to hair and makeup leaving me alone to check out the space.

The studio was a large open room with gray walls. They’d put together a bedroom set in the middle of the space and more stylists were busy setting up finishing touches and adjusting lights.

I found a seat, away from the chaos, and pulled out my phone to text Coby.

Me:Guess where I am?

He answered right away.

Coby:Starbucks?

Me:I don’t think that would warrant a text. I’m there every day lol

Coby:That’s why it was my first guess.

Me:You have a point.

I snapped a picture of the studio and hit send.

Me:I’m at my first photoshoot!

Coby:That’s amazing! It looks huge in there.

Me:It is! Zoey is so sweet. This is her first professional shoot, so I came along to make sure everything runs smoothly.
