Thinking about her alone in a city that size made the coffee I drank on an empty stomach churn in my gut. Even though I knew she was learning Krav, I still didn’t like it.
“How’s your new boss?”
A chair squeaked in the background and she sighed. “He’s, how should I say it... interesting.”
“Soo, everyone and everything is…,” I hesitated, “interesting?”
She laughed. “Sorry, I’m exhausted, and it’s only lunchtime. My vocabulary is lacking. Victor reminds me of Kronk physically with the personality of Yzma.”
“Yzma and Kronk? Like from the Disney movie?”
“Yes of course,The Emperor’s New Groove. I can’t help where my brain takes me, keep up.”
“I shall try. But I’ve never seen that movie.”
“What? It’s only the most underrated Disney movie of all time. We will have to fix that. Anyway, he has this whole, I’ll take over the empire thing going for him. I’ve never met someone with such an eagle eye for everything that goes on in the media. This man must have spies all over the country. And I’ve only been here for two days!”
Laughing, I added, “On the plus side, you can learn a lot from him.”
“That’s my hope. I can’t wait to get some clients and get my hands dirty. Show him how much I can take.”
Now that she sounded uplifted, that familiar spunk to her voice. “You can take a lot. I should know.” I dropped my voice an octave. “You like to get your hands dirty too.”
I knew she was shaking her head and scowling. “Always bringing the conversation back to sexy talk.”
She laughed again, the sound brought a grin to my face. I’m glad I could cheer her up.
“I miss you. And before you go there, not forthatreason,“ she said.
“I miss you too, baby. It’s only a few days until you’re in my arms again.” A few days and then she’d be packing to move across the country. I forced a smile. I didn’t want her to hear any disappointment in my voice. “I gotta go. My favorite crotchety old patient is coming in any second. I love you. And congratulations, you deserve the world.”
“I love you too. Talk later.”
For the rest of the day, I let my mind stay focused on my patients. Doling out exercises, massaging scar tissue, and stretching limbs kept me from focusing on how I was feeling. Which was like shit. I just got her back, and now, I’d be losing her again. I knew this was what she wanted and more than anything, she deserved to be happy.
I loved her. But I knew firsthand that love wasn’t always enough. I was still scared as hell of taking things to the next level. Could I see myself moving to California again? Palm Cove was my home, even if it already felt empty without her. There was nothing left to do but to wait and see.
I finished up what felt like the longest work week ever, although it was only Wednesday. I’d be picking Kendahl up the following evening from the airport and couldn’t wait to wrap my arms around her. For now, I’d take what I could get even if it was just a FaceTime movie date.
She was due to call me soon, so I changed from my work polo and khakis into comfortable sweats. I opened my shirt drawer, then closed it again, deciding that it wouldn’t hurt to be a tease and show off what she was missing.
Her gorgeous face lit up my phone and I swiped to answer purposely angling the lens so half my chest was in view.
“Hey—Oh damn, I was not prepared for your naked chest.” She narrowed her eyes. “You did that on purpose, didn’t you?”
“Maybe.” I shrugged, raising one brow. “Or maybe, you caught me while I was getting dressed. What do you think shirt or no shirt?”
“No shirt obviously,” she said. “Even though it’s mean to taunt me, I wish I was there already. Tomorrow is too far away.” Her lip jutted out in an exaggerated pout.
“I know, baby. Trust me, I feel the same way.”
I watched her get settled onto her hotel bed and open up her laptop. Her golden hair swung into her face, and I itched to feel those soft strands wrapped around my fingers.
“I’m thinking I need a comfort movie tonight,” she said with her eyes focused on her computer screen.
“Okay…” I said. With Kendahl that could mean the most twisted horror movie or the extreme opposite, a Disney classic. “And what would that be tonight?” I tried to keep my voice level but hoped she wasn’t about to sayThe Texas Chainsaw Massacreor some shit. That was not my thing.
Her eyes lit up as she landed on her intended pick. She held her phone up and flipped the screen so I was looking at her laptop.
