Kendahl added, “No need to get into a pissing contest. You’re both big and strong.” She imitated a cartoonish caveman grunt making Mia crack up.
Before I could respond with a wise crack of my own, Jill made her way over to us with Aiden at her side. Great, everyone left except the only guy I’d love to never see again.
Chapter 24
Kendahl
“Heyguys,”Jillsaidas she reached us. Poor thing looked worn out. Her shoulder drooped, and the worry line in her brow stood out more than normal. “Is everyone doing okay?”
“Don’t worry about us, Jill. We’re fine. How are you holding up?” I asked as I reached out to squeeze her hand.
“Terrible,” Aiden cut in. “I have absolutely no service. The Wi-Fi went out at some point last night and none of my content has been uploaded.” He stared at his phone screen, which somehow still glowed brightly. Jill looked up at the ceiling as if to say, why me?
“We were asking your aunt how she was doing. But wow, this must be so hard for you… being without the internet for a whole day.” I let the sarcasm drip from my lips.
“Funny, karaoke queen. The two of you will get buried with the rest of the internet’s failures if I don’t upload your interview. Do you know how fast people move on? Well, I’ll tell you. Faster than you can say loser, which is what we’ll all be if I miss a day of posting content.” Jill placed a hand on his shoulder.
“Aiden, why don’t you go get some coffee. I’ll talk to Mike in a bit about the internet situation, okay?”
He inhaled and blew a breath out slowly. “Fine. But please hurry.”
After he scurried away to the coffee bar, Jill let out a hollow laugh and rubbed her brow. “If I don’t laugh, I’ll cry.”
Mia gave her a hug. “It’ll be okay. Hey, Shawn, why don’t you guys take Aiden with you. I’m sure Mike and Tim could use another pair of hands to help out.” Shawn narrowed his eyes toward Aiden’s retreated figure before giving a resigned sigh.
“Wait, before you guys head out, I heard from Tim that we’re going to be taking in some families who had to evacuate from their beachfront homes. I’m not sure how many, but he asked me to see if any of you minded doubling up in rooms.” Jill looked between Coby and me, knowing full well that we were the only ones in the group, other than Avery, who had our own rooms. Speaking of Avery, she hadn’t shown up all morning. I made a mental note to go check on her. “I didn’t think it would be a big deal seeing as you two are back together.” She gave us a sweet, maternal grin.
“No problem at all. Coby and I are practically sharing a room already. Right, babe?” I widened my eyes at him so he’d go along with it.
“Yup. I can grab my things and move them into Ken’s room right now.” A gleam danced in his gray eyes. I knew what he was thinking. “Can I have your key?”
I cleared my throat and stood up to dig it out of my purse. “Here you go. Don’t go moving all my stuff around.” I hated when my organized makeup system was disrupted.
He raised a brow and said in a deep teasing voice, “Not even your flower?”
Heat rose to my cheeks. That bastard. “Especially not my flower. It has delicate petals.”
Mia watched our conversation with a hand on her hip and a raised brow. “What flower? Did you bring a new accessory you haven’t shown me?”
Coby didn’t miss a beat. “She did. It’s probably the best accessory I’ve ever seen. I’d love for you to show it to me again later.”
“I want to see it too,” Mia added excitedly. “Ooh we can get dressed cute for the party, and you can wear it.”
Coby barely contained his laughter. “I’d love to see that. Maybe you can go show it to Mia right now,” he said, holding his hand in front of his mouth.
Ugh, he was such a man child. “Great idea, Mi, but,” I took Jill’s hand, “let’s go chat wedding stuff with Jill.” As Coby followed us with his gaze, I flipped my hair out and called over my shoulder, “Alone, please. You two or three I mean,” remembering Aiden, “have fun.”
We took some much-needed girl time in Jill’s room, painting our nails by the light of the window and solidifying plans, so Jill wouldn’t have to cancel her wedding. She was upset that most of their guests left, but she admitted that a part of her was relieved it would be a small gathering.
“Mike’s family is amazing, but since it’s his first wedding, they really went overboard with the guest list. He wants to give me the best, and I love him for that, but this is my second marriage, and I didn’t want a big to do. The perfect wedding for me would be a beautiful space where Mike and I can recite our vows to each other, seal our lives together from there on out, and enjoy a nice dinner and some dancing with our guests. Nothing crazy.”
I thought about what my perfect wedding would be, and it sounded exactly like what Jill had described. A beach ceremony with a handful of close family and friends, me in a simple dress with my hair blowing in the ocean breeze. I let my mind drift, imagining the waves crashing and the heat of the sun warming my exposed shoulders. I looked over at my soon to be husband and gasped. Why was I seeing Coby in a thin white button down and sleeves rolled up? A few buttons were undone to expose his tanned chest.
No, nope, no way. I shook my head willing my brain cells to erase that little presentation.
“What do you think, Ken?” Mia asked. I turned my head in her direction, staring blankly. I completely missed what she asked me.
Clearing my throat I responded, “Yeah, sounds great.” She beamed.
