She laughed. “Don’t be a tease, bring over the goods.” She had spread out a quilt over the queen bed mock picnic blanket style and patted the side across from her.
I hesitated, “Shit, I think I forgot to order something for you. All of this is mine.” I flashed a grin. She scrunched her nose and narrowed her eyes. It was too fun to tease her, and I needed that to pull myself out of my post-interview funk. “Kidding, no need to laser blast me.”
I put that container and a few others in front of her along with plastic cutlery. “Laser blast?” she asked as she opened the lids.
“Yeah. That thing you do with your eyes. It reminds me of Cyclops from X-Men when he shoots his deadly laser things and destroys enemies.” I stuffed a piece of garlic bread into my face.
“X-Men? Who would have known Coby Barnes was a comic nerd,” she said as she swallowed a bite of pasta.
“Did I reveal too much?” Her face lit up whether it was from the food or my revelation, I didn’t know. “Yes, I’m a nerd. But come on, what little boy didn’t want to be a superhero with cool powers? Laser eyes, ice powers, sharp claw hands. Plus Jean Gray—hot as hell. I think she was my first crush.”
She was laughing, like a real true laugh. “Oh my God. This is the best thing I’ve heard all day, all year even. Have you read all the comics?”
“Um.” I grinned. “I don’t know if I want to answer that.” I cut into my steak with a plastic knife, which was working out about as good as expected.
“I’m kidding. I love that you have a nerdy side. It’s refreshing.” She got up and walked over to the corner of the room, grabbed a bottle of wine from who knows where, and uncorked it. “I’m about to give away all my secrets but…I’m a nerd too. I saw those movies. Wolverine is hot. I always wondered if that metal stuff was ineverypart of his body?” She took a swig out of the bottle, wiping a drop off her lips before offering it to me. “Sorry, no glasses.”
I took a sip of the full-bodied red. I wasn’t a wine snob, but I knew it was a decent bottle. “You dirty girl. Are you asking if he has an Adamantium dick?” Thank God I had swallowed because I might have choked and spit wine all over the place.
“Inquiring minds want to know,” she quipped, taking the bottle back from me.
“Since I already revealed the true depths of my nerdiness…no, his dick is a normal dick. The metal is only in his bones.” I raised a brow at the face she was giving me. “Not that bone.” I chuckled.
“That’s a missed opportunity. I bet there’s a porno out there with a metal-dicked Wolverine. Should we Google?” She grabbed her phone and tapped it on before busting out laughing. “Okay, even I can’t go there. Who knows what my search history will look like after that rabbit hole. Dicks…too many dicks.”
“You have to stop saying dicks.” I shook my head and attempted to swallow a bite of meat.
She lowered her voice to a husky whisper. “What’s wrong? Having trouble with your meat?”
“I never have trouble with my meat. My meat is perfect.”
“Prove it.” She got on all fours and crawled closer to me. I zeroed in on the outline of her bare tits through her loose shirt, and my cock stiffened. The plastic fork speared with a hunk of steak dropped from my shaky fingers as she inched closer. I stared at the outline of her full bottom lip, wanting to feel it between my teeth.
She parted her lips, letting a small sigh escape them, and I leaned in ready to feel her, taste her. Then she sat up and grabbed my fork. She brought the bite of steak to her lips and slowly, too slowly, bit down, sliding the piece into her mouth. As she chewed, she moaned again. “Ooh yeah, your meat is pretty perfect. Might need a bit more salt though.”
With a grin, she scrambled back to her side of the bed and took another swig out of the bottle. I cleared my throat. “You’re evil.”
“What?” she asked innocently. “You don’t like to share?”
She passed the bottle my way. We had already finished half of it. I slid the rest of my container of steak in her direction. “My meat is all yours.”
With a full wattage grin she pulled it closer and said, “Good boy.”
Two bottles of wine and many empty containers later, we sprawled out on Kendahl’s bed keeping a good foot of space between us. I listened to the sounds of her breathing mixed with the constant beat of rain and wind against the windows. A warm bubble of contentedness enveloped me at being near her. “So today was…” I stopped, searching for the right words.
“A hot mess express,” she added.
Sighing, I stretched my arms above my head before turning on my side to face her. “Pretty much.” Her blue eyes bore into me. I closed my eyes to get out the words that were swirling around in my head. “But it was one of the best days I’ve had in a long time. I…” Shit, why was this so hard? Everything in me wanted to make more jokes, laugh up the chaos that this trip has been so far. Maybe it was the wine, or the nearness of her skin inches away from mine, but I wanted to tell her the truth. I needed to. “I haven’t been one hundred percent honest with you. The real reason I left was—”
A massive gust of wind rattled the windows, and the room went pitch black. Kendahl jumped. “Shit, we lost power.”
Chapter 21
Kendahl
“Where’smyphone?”Igrumbled. I’ve tried not to look at it since the going viral thing started, but it was the only source of light I had. I planted my foot directly onto a takeout container. “Oh God, I think I spaghettied my foot.”
Of course this would happen when the floor was a minefield of half-empty food containers, and I was happily wine buzzed.Another gust rattled the window. Hopefully our friends were back in their rooms safely, especially Mia. My chest tightened at the thought of her stuck outside in the dark storm. We’d always taken care of each other. Although she laid it on thick in that department, I worried about her equally. We had different ways of showing it.
