“Yeah, man,” Shawn added while gulping down a sip of coffee. “I’m honestly surprised she took your sorry ass back. You must have done a lot of groveling.”
Coby draped an arm around me, making my insides clench from the close contact. “I’m surprised too. And I’m nowhere near done with my groveling.”
“Yeah, if I know my bestie as well as I think I do, you’re going to need to up your game to get back into her good graces,” Mia said.
Mike’s gruff voice had me glancing away from Mia. He reached the table with Jill by his side, both looking somber.
“Hey guys.” He pulled up a couple chairs to join us. “This damn weather messed up our plans.”Jill put a reassuring hand on his shoulder, giving him a gentle squeeze through his plaid flannel shirt.
Despite her bummed-out appearance she pushed a smile through. “It’ll be okay, love. There’s nothing we can do about the weather. No reason not to improvise and make the best of it.”
My big cheesy omelet arrived, fluffy and warm, with a side of diced potatoes and toast. An otherworldly sound came from my stomach, and while listening as closely as I could to Jill, I scarfed down the food in front of me only pausing to take generous sips of my creamy coffee from the oversized mug in front of me.
“As long as the forecast I’ve been hearing is wrong, everything should be fine.” Dejected, he slugged back his own coffee like it was a shot. It might have been more than coffee, but it looked like he needed a little added spirit. “I’ll find a way to make it up to you, Jilly.”
Shawn cut in. “What have you heard about the forecast?”
Everyone at our table leaned in, although between my food and Coby’s closeness I was having a hard time concentrating.
“I don’t want to cause a panic, but Uncle Tim told me this morning that there’s a chance of a tropical storm rolling though Serenity. As of now, they think it’ll pass by us and head straight out to sea. He doesn’t think there’s any cause for concern, but I can’t help but worry about it.”
Voices dropped to a low hush as everyone processed Mike’s news. I’d hate for their guests to up and leave them in the lurch when their wedding plans were already getting messed up by Mother Nature. It seemed the rest of the table agreed.
“We’re here for you guys. Krav family forever, remember?” Mia said, sweetly. “Plus, Kendahl hasn’t melted from the rain yet, so I guess we’re all good.”
“Haha, very funny.” I showed her my choice finger from across the table.
“Speaking of melting,” Jill said, “How are you feeling after your performance last night?” She waggled her brows at me, too cute for me to be sassy with her.
Aiden Aarons stood up from the next table and leaned behind Jill’s chair like she had summoned the devil himself. He was like a damn ninja. I hadn’t even noticed him in here, but there he was, bobbing man bun and all.
Jill turned around, giving him a cheerful grin. “Oh everyone, I don’t think I introduced you to my nephew, Aiden. He traveled here for the wedding with his girlfriend all the way from New York.”
Her nephew? Well wasn’t that just great.
“Of course, anything for my favorite aunt.” He hugged Jill and grinned. Nephew or not, I still didn’t trust him. I knew he was only creeping around us to get more content for his channel.
Aiden grabbed a piece of toast from my plate, took a large bite, and added, “Aunt Jill, you’ll have to read some of the comments on my video from last night. These two might help me hit a million subscribers.”
That little shit. How dare he steal my extremely valuable carbs. I narrowed my eyes at him.
“Listen, while Kendahl and I are glad that your channel is gaining views, this weekend is about your aunt, not some drunken karaoke battle.” Coby cut in while handing me his piece of toast. He really was trying to get on my good side.
Nods started around the table along with a few yeahs murmured.Aiden took his time responding, thoroughly chewing my stolen toast, then tilting his head to the side.
“I see what you’re saying, bro. How about this? You two give me an interview for my channel before any other content creators get to you, and I’ll leave you be for the rest of the weekend.” He snagged someone else’s orange juice, gulped it down, and leaned closer. “What do you say?”
What I wanted to do had nothing to do with words and everything to do with a few moves I had learned in Krav. But thankfully, Coby answered for us with his voice deep and gravelly.
“I won’t speak for my girl, but if it’ll get all of this nonsense to stop so we can focus back on the wedding, then I’m in.” Turning to me, he asked, “What do you think, babe?”
My face flushed, and I tried not to show him the reaction that hisbabecaused.
“Okay, I’ll do it.”
