“I met him at the church. I told you about him, didn’t I? Big guy, like six foot five, big feet too, if you know what I mean?” she said.

“Ew, Mom. I don’t want to think about your random old man boyfriend’s penis.” I huffed into the phone. “If you’re getting to your meetings this weekend is all I care about. Please be responsible, and don’t tell Richard anything about me this time. I don’t need to get a phone call from any of your hookup’s sons, okay?”

Her voice grew thick with an expert-level passive-aggressive edge. “I can’t help it if I love my beautiful only daughter so much that I want everyone to know it.”

Was it five o’clock yet? I was past needing a nap and moved on to needing a beverage instead.

“I love you too, Mom. Be good, and I’ll talk to you when I get back.”

She mimicked kissy noises and told me to stop mothering her so much, she was a “grown woman for Christ’s sake.”Easy for her to say after I spent my entire life making sure we were fed, clothed, and healthy.

With the important business taken care of, I tossed my phone to the other side of the bed where it rolled off with a thunk. Whatever. I didn’t need it anyway.

I found the itinerary in my purse and looked it over. With as last minute as this wedding was, I hadn’t expected this level of organization. Jill, or someone close to her, was a wedding planning master.

I wasn’t sure how to feel about the entire weekend being meticulously planned out for us, but in a way, it would be nice to just go with the flow and turn my brain off. Every day I was planning, problem solving, and leading. It was time to let my hair down and get my party on.

Chapter 6

Kendahl

AsexhaustedasIfelt, hanging out in my urchin lair alone was not my idea of a good time, so I changed into going-out jeans and a black lacy cropped top, which I paired with my favorite spiked black heels. With another glance in the mirror, I smoothed out my humidity-poofed hair and slapped some gloss on my lips. It wasn’t my usual level of effort for a night out, but I was going to be surrounded by couples at a small mom-and-pop restaurant, not picking up guys at a club. It would do.

The sky had darkened to a charcoal gray, and the wind whipped my hair in front of my face. So much for my attempt to look put together. Mia texted me to let me know that she and Shawn were already at the bar and saving me a seat. I wondered who else showed up in the few hours of chill time we all had in our rooms.I spit out strands that got stuck to my sticky gloss as I made my way next door.

It seemed that every guest from the inn was already there. Raucous laughter and Beach Boy tunes poured through the open wall of the bar. Hints of garlic, fried food, and salty sea air invaded my nostrils causing my stomach to growl. I hoped there was decent food since it was the only option within walking distance. Plus, it wasn’t like I’d bail on our group to go eat alone like a snob.

I peered into the open bar window and spotted Shawn with his arm slung around Mia’s shoulders. She noticed me and waved my way. Her curly hair was even bigger thanks to the increased humidity.I pushed my way through the wooden doors and my stomach growled again. Damn stomach, it was like I’d never smelled fried fish before.

“Looking hot, Ken. Ooh you’re wearing those heels you texted me a picture of!” Mia stood up and squeezed me in a rib-crushing hug. I fingered one of her bouncy curls. She didn’t know how lucky she was to have this gorgeous hair.
