Moros

Climbing the gates ofthe community was the last thing I anticipated having to do when I reached them, the Guards all along the top screaming for ammo. Fire. Anything.

Which means they waited too long to sound the alarm.

The danger is too close to keep those inside protected, especially if someone like me needs to getout.

I’m gonna banish them all.

Red-hot anger fuels my blood, and my muscles burn as yank myself up the log barricade.

The scene in front of me feels all too familiar when I reach the top.

Bodies fill the spaces I can see between the trees and brush, some upright and some not, all of them in some form of decomposition. Missing arms or legs. Leaking heads. Disfigured torsos and hanging jaws. Dangling intestines, seeping gashes, and peeling skin.

But as I look closer to the base of the barricade, following the horde’s quick movements in our direction, the number of decomposed multiples.

They seem to be moving faster.

Some jolt as they’re hit with homemade bullets, others falling in heaps of flames.

The rest of them just keep fuckingcoming.

They connect with the base, making the beam beneath my feet vibrate from the impact.

As bodies drop, their comrades trample them, using the meat and bones as steppingstones to get higher.

My chest clenches tight as I bark orders, redirecting focus of those with projectile munitions away from the growing pile beneath our feet.

We can’t let it make a hill.

Another wave hits the barricade, and a groaning creak follows the thump of flesh on wood, the line of Guards all jolting back from the impact.

“Fuck!”

I catch myself on an upright when I stumble and that’s when I see it.

Horses.

More specifically, the guys riding atop them.

“We gotta draw themaway.”

Moros’s stiff command has the hairs on the back of my neck standing on end before my feet are even flattened against the unstable surface.

“Boss?”

“Look.” He tips his chin up in the general direction of the Outskirts and I shake my head.

An icy chill runs down my spine when I finally see it.

No, not it.
