I delivered my best slant-eyed look of death.

He chuckled. “It was so nice to see Summer at the Sunny Side Up. Glad she’s getting back on her feet.”

 “I suppose.”

“And who knew she was a Motors fan? Just like Aurora.” Punctuated by the perfect Conor smirk. Off he went, leaving me gaping like a trout.

 Chapter Twenty-Six

 Summer

 * * *

Adeline walked into the kitchen where I was seated at the table on my laptop. I had just finished a report for Scott but given what I’d heard from Ryder about my career prospects, I wasn’t sure whether to send it to him.

 “How were the little ones?”

Adeline smiled as she placed her guitar case near the door. “So cute. Usually I just sing the classics—‘Wheels on the Bus,’ ‘Baa Baa Black Sheep,’ etcetera—but today they were actually calling out requests for original material.”

My new roomie had found her calling singing for kids at JiggleJams, a class devoted to crawlers and toddlers at the Chicago School of Folk Music. She had the sweetest voice and the best temperament for working with children.

“So what did you give them?”

“I have one called the Banana Peel Song and another about dragons.”

 “Game of Thrones, PG version.”

She laughed. “Exactly. So, how are things?”

“Not bad. Still no response from Dash, though he’s back in town according to that finest of tabloid rags, Hot Goss.”

“Yeah, he’s working at the hockey camp with Dad and my brothers.”

Dash? Working with Hatch? I had no idea what to make of that, only I was fairly certain I didn’t want them in the same locker room together, never mind on the same rink.

Adeline continued. “Conor said Carter wasn’t too pleased to hear you managed to recover your belongings. In my little brother’s words, it looked like he’d swallowed garbage water.”

Of course, he’d rather punish me. I understood it even if I hated it.

Adeline’s phone buzzed and she quickly checked it. “Summer, I advise you to never have three obnoxious brothers.”

“Oh yeah?” Weirdly, I wanted to hear about Hatch.

You ain’t weird. You’re just horny.

If I could strangle my alter ego, I would. I silently pondered on how to kill her dead for good.

Another zzz, and Adeline scanned her screen again. “The Kershaw Kinder thread has been buzzing since we found out Hatch has a secret woman stashed away in Saugatuck.”

My heart jumped into my throat. “He does?”

“Yeah, some nosey Nelly from the town sent a photo of them getting coffee to my mom, and now everyone’s trying to squeeze more information out of him.”

There was visual evidence? I smothered a nervy chuckle. “Have you seen this photo?”

“Yeah. Some blonde piece, Motors fan. Sounds like he picked up a townie. Which wouldn’t surprise me because he did that last year according to Conor.”

 That would be Ava.
