“For not being able to stand it. For coming as soon as I called. For trusting me. For being worthy of my trust. For everything.”
His gaze flit away from hers as his face twisted with some internal pain. “I feel like I don’t deserve to hear those things.”
Her heart ached to hear him say it. “I know, but you do. And they’re the truth. My truth anyway.”
He pulled her close, his arms so tight around her she could hardly breathe.
“I wish we got to have a normal love story,” she said, stroking his hair.
“Lovestory? Are you saying—?”
She sighed. “I’m not going to fight how I feel anymore. I think today makes it clear that we need each other.”
He nodded. “We don’t need to make any big declarations now.”
“Okay,” she agreed.
There was a knock at the door and Thea peeked in. “Everyone decent?”
ChapterTwenty-Eight
Harlow nodded, climbing off Finn’s lap, though she snuggled into the crook of his arm as Thea sat in a chair opposite the couch. “Alaric and Cian are downstairs dealing with Veronica Morova. She is quite unhappy about how the two of you dealt with the House of Remiel foot soldiers today.”
“Then they shouldn’t have been trying to kidnap my—” he stopped short and blushed.
Thea raised her eyebrows. “Do finish that sentence, Finn.”
Harlow giggled as the flush in his cheeks deepened.
“That’s a conversation we ought to have in private, probably…” he muttered.
Harlow smiled and patted the hard muscle of his stomach. “It’s okay. You can call me your girlfriend. I’ll allow it… Or were you going to call me yourlovah?”
Thea giggled now and Finn blushed even more. It was adorable to see him so undone by two giggling witches, Harlow decided. She brushed a kiss on his cheek and slid her hand into his, stroking her thumb down the center of his palm so he’d be reminded just how much she enjoyed being his lover. She felt his shiver of pleasure, and when he returned the gesture, she knew he’d understood.
Thea was talking, saying something about the vampires, so Harlow tried to focus. “I think they’ll be talking for a while. Apparently Berith is in quite the rage and Veronica was sent to find out what the Illuminated will do next. Cian is trying to help Alaric, but to be honest with you, I think they’re being too nice.”
Finn grimaced. “Should I go help?”
Thea smiled gently. “That might be good.”
Finn got up and pressed a soft kiss to Harlow’s lips. “I’ll be back soon.”
She nodded, staying silent as he left the room, her eyes fixed on her hands, instead of her sister. Harlow couldn’t bring herself to look at Thea.
“This all happened because you were angry with me,” Thea said, accusation coloring her words.
Harlow resented her saying it, even if it was technically true. But if Thea was going to be condescending, two could play that game.
“Because Iamangry with you,” Harlow corrected.
“Fair enough. I kept things from you, but can you blame me?”
Harlow looked up then, surprised to see the ugly, arrogant look on Thea’s face that reminded her so much of the Illuminated as a whole. The entire Illuminated Order wore that look constantly, like they knew better abouteverything.
“You’re turning into one of them, aren’t you?”
Thea looked confused.
