So, I just watch as she steps into the water and begins to wash her body, as if she is trying to remove my scent from her. She can scrub all she wants; my scent will remain on her skin. She is my mate. That is how others know who she belongs to.

Standing, I walk over to the water's edge. “Why do you do that?” I ask as I step into the warm lake with her, she turns to me, her eyes glowing gold.

“Ari said water helps with pain. Ari said We trust you.” She nibbles her lower lip nervously, her eyes start to fill with tears again, and she bangs the water with her fists; it sprays up andhits my chest. “I do not know why I am here. I don’t know what’s here. I do not know Trelor.”

As daemons, we are born once of Hell and then once to our charges. Lexus was most likely ripped from Hell to be here.

“What does Lexus remember?” I ask with concern. I lower us both into the lake, and the warm water laps around us. The water is soothing, and part of me wonders if Lexus or Ari is making it so with magick.

“It was dark, I only remember dark, Trelor. Then gold—so much gold. Then I’m here cause daemon tries to kill my Ari.” She answers, her voice somber as she looks at me, tears rolling down her cheeks still.

I frown. “You do not see hell?” I ask, no daemon has ever not seen Hell, not seen what we are born of or from. The devil himself hand-picks the daemons that are going to be charges, each with a different talent for evil, each at a different level.

I was chosen because I was a firstborn daemon, one of the oldest and most powerful. I was given to Gaelan, as he also shared a similar birthright and path as I did.

In recent years, no new daemons have been born.

This is why I worry about where Lexus came from. The devil is not back, nor any reaper king to be pulling daemons from the depths of Hell.

“Dark, Trelor,” her eyes study mine, clouded with her emotions.

I knew she was a new daemon to this life, but to have not been born in Hell? She will have no idea of the rules or how to control her powers. She will have no idea of anything from our world. Leaning forward, I kiss her lips softly.

“Lexus will be safe, Trelor will always protect,” I say confidently, wanting her to know that I will never let any harm come to her.

She smiles, then leans forward and places her lips on mine, kissing me as if I had just kissed her. She is learning, I can’t wait to show her more

I stand with her still in my arms, and I walk us back to the shoreline.

“Where will Trelor take us?” she asks.

“Safe place,” I shimmer her to my wing of the castle.

Her eyes light up with intrigue when she sees the nest. I made it for my mate. For my Rose.

“Can you feel Ari-Rose?” I ask, worried about what Ari will be feeling right now.

“She’s scared,” she whispers with a nod.

Chapter 45

LEXUS

“Where am I?”Ari asks in my head, her voice shakes with fear. I feel her emotions as if they were my own. I don’t know what to tell her; she moves under my skin. Restless, like an itch I can’t scratch.

This place confuses me so much that I just want to lie down, close my eyes, and wait for the darkness to come back again, my safe place.

My blue daemon says he will keep me safe, but I don’t know if that’s true. So many tried to kill me,so manywanted to hurt us. If they try again, Iwilldestroy them all.

I step back from him and look up.

“Ari asks where she is.” Confusion colors my tone. I know she is inside me, butwhere?

He pulls in a breath, then reaches out to touch my face. I want to flinch back, but the feeling I get from Ari about this daemon stops me; he is our mate.

Whatever that means.

“Ari-Rose still here, just inside you.” He says, then he touches the place where my heart is. I look down at his huge hand, unsure what to think.
